CEL after adding STP Fuel Treatment

Hey guys,

So after I filled up tonight I added a bottle of the STP Fuel System Cleaner (can't get Techron in my area). I get about 1-2 miles down the road and my Check Engine Light comes on. I haven't checked the code yet.

Did the STP trip it? Did it knock something (debris?) loose in the engine?

It probably upset the emissions sensors a little bit. When you next fill up, disconnect the battery for a minute or two to reset the cel, then see how it runs on the fresh tank.

did not mix with the gas well enough?

I am guessing that it should have been mixed better with the gasoline?

perhaps the bottle should have been poured in before the fillup? and then it would mix as you poured in the fresh gas.

I was just at Checker Auto Parts and the Techron bottles were a bit over $6 and some change while BG44K runs about $21.

Let us know if your Check Engine Light returns-I got a can of the 44K raring to go right now but not keen to start a chain of lights.

I think you were right. After going through a tank of gas with the STP additive, I filled up today, reset the CEL when I got home and no more light!

Techron rocks- IMHO WAY better than the lucas or any other additive. It smoothed out my idle and acceleration just like advertised. Shortly thereafter 2 concentrated techron treatments, I replaced my fuel filter, and changed the oil to mobil1 high mileage synth- whoa, what a difference.

FYI, when I changed the fuel filter- I swear MUD poured out of the old one..
