CEL and VSC Lights On

I was making a quick trip over to Wal-Mart, about a 25 minute ride to the other side of the mountain and about halfway up the mountain cruising at about 50 the check engine light came on. Not 5 seconds later the VSC lights came on (VSC TRAC and VSC OFF). The car ran fine the rest of the night and the VSC actually beeped at me getting off the interstate in the middle of the off ramp. Anyone know what may have happened? Ive had a sneaking suspicion that the traction control hasn't been working properly it activates if I even slightly hustle into a corner on curvy road and it feels like it locks the brakes up on the rear end but I don't have the option of turning it off on the dash so if anyone knows what's up please let me know
