CEL “driving cycle”

So after 3 years and 100k miles my 4Runner threw its first CEL the other day. I read it and it came back as P01780 which is neutral safety. I had to drive home from work and noticed nothing wrong with the car. Every gear worked fine and shutting it on and off worked fine as well. I got home and cleared the code and it hasn’t come back for ~100-150 miles.

Is it safe to say that it’s not going to come back?

I’m not sure what the cycle is for resetting the CEL. I’ve heard 80-90 miles but I’m not sure

It depends on the DTC (code) that sets. Some DTc's will request the check engine light immediately, some after 3-5 consecutive fails, and some never request a check engine light. Typically you'll get a pending DTC before your check engine light actually illuminates. Could be a fluke or a sensor that's just starting to fail or failing intermittently.

I thought the CEL on all cars will turn off after a number of restarts regardless of miles driven, but codes will still be there.

Unless you need to be clean for an emissions inspection, I don’t see a problem if it doesn’t recur.

If I brought my vehicles to the shop each time I had a one-off scare, I’d be one broke *****!

I don't know the driving cycle thing, but to clear the CEL, I either use my code reader, or pull the negative lead off the battery for a minute or two.

Just me, though.

I just use my scangauge to clear them, but one time before I had that I accidentally tried to start the engine while the engine was running, the engine then stopped and it somehow cleared my code.
