CEL from pressing the AC button?

So I was "not" watching top gear when i was driving back from lunch on my in dash DVD player when... I decided to turn the ac to circulate the gas/lubricant...

On pops the Check Engine Light at the same time.....

I tried everything to get rid of it...

First thing I did was to remind it that it was a Toyota.

Then I cursed at it and told it to turn off or else!!

Even threatend to buy and american SUV if it didnt stop acting up.

None of that worked .. so I guess I need some sorta computer device / software to figure it out.. What do you people use?

I have an android phone and I belive there are apps for OBD2...

Do we have a code list somewhere that decifers things?

And also .. is there a line of code that I could install to give me a 650hp, 35inch tires and lockers?

Your 'code list' is called the FSM: 1996-2002 4Runner FSM

In the US, many auto parts stores will read your codes or lend you a handheld box to do it (and clear it). (Yeah, California there's a problem, I know). You can get a cheapie OBDII code reader on Amazon for under $50. Works on all cars and worth it. Or spend like $100 at the dealer (not recommended). There is a thread on the Android hookup on here--I'm not sure it's ready for primetime:Linky

You can also clear the codes by pulling the EFI fuse or pulling the negative cable off the battery for a few minutes. Some codes may take a tank of gas to return. I can't think of any way the A/C button could help throw a code/CEL.

My CEL came on too when turning on the AC.

As for now, it seems to be a coinsidence. However, it was the P0446 code.

When our runners give you a CEL, do we run in a hard or soft limp mode???

Where is our obd2 port? I havent even looked yet...

Well, the only thing I can think of is that starting the A/C calls for use of vacuum, and an EVAP system on the verge of throwing a P0446 anyway might just get kicked over the brink, as it were. Just a WAG.

I tightened the gas cap and the problem CEL went away!!!

Thats wayyy to sensitive.. I hope its gone for good.....

Oh, I was gonna say, try threatening that you'll trade it for a Ford Explorer
