Champion winch question

I got an opportunity and got a free 10,000 champion winch which is new. I have read reviews and comments about it and everyone points out the negatives of using cheaply made winches... However are there any things like sealing the motor better or anything like that to help extend the life of the winch... Since I got the winch free I will be switching to a quality synthetic line... Winch will be used maybe once a month if need be... Any input would be appreciated.

Use a cover to help keep the elements out. Dont do water crossings that will submerge the winch. You should be good to go.

The RC guys waterproof electronics with liquid electrical tape.

I would consider checking the gear case and maybe re-packing with a quality marine grease. I have taken apart new items and found that the internals weren't lubed correctly and the machining was spotty. Chinese and other low cost producers have gotten better over the years, especially on the bits we can see, but can get away with stuff internally. I like to tinker at things and have no problem taking apart brand new tools and machines. Some people thing it is crazy but I enjoy the process.
