Change Oil?

Just bought this car from a dealership with 75k miles. Dealer changed oil with regular Dino oil about 1200 miles ago. I am not sure what type of oil was used before but I want to permanently switch to synthetic. Should I switch it now or wait until 3k?

Also the V6 calls for 5.5 quarts. Will I get by with a 5 quart jug or will I need to buy another quart for the .5?

Buy an extra quart and save the 0.5Q remaining for the next change.

But depending on how well your truck drains you may only need to put in 5q.
 
If it were me I would change it now. In my mind things like oil is a cheap investment in your vehicle.

FYI, I have a 2005 V6. I use the larger filter by Mobile M1 301. It gives me more oil capacity and more filtration. I use a large jug and almost another quart of oil when I change it out. I use Mobile 1 15000 mile oil (Extended care I think) and I change it out around 5000 miles which is about every 5 months.

For me, spending $80 a year on oil is not expensive. I drink more Captain Morgan in a month than that.
 
There is absolutely no need to change it now. Dyno is perfectly fine unless you're doing a LOT of towing and/or live where temps reach -20 or below.

If you want to switch to synthetic...then just wail til the next oil change. There will be ZERO difference in engine ware.
 
This is the kinda thread that makes the instant oil companies giddy. The continued propagation of the 3k mile oil change myth.

Your dealer used quality conventional oil, unless you bought from a shady place... then I wouldn't trust anything about the car. That oil will last easily 5k, which is the recommended oil interval for your vehicle, regardless of whether oil or synthetic.

Wait. 5k miles. Save the world, just a bit of grief. Then, switch to synthetic and increase your interval to 7500 or higher, whatever you feel comfy with.

No car made in 20 years has needed a 3k on current oil. Unless you are using oil found in your grandfather's garage from the 1970's, even your basic conventional oil sold at Autozone or the like is light years ahead of 20-30-40 years ago.

Save yourself some money and time. Go 5000 this go round, then convert. Otherwise you just waste oil.

Since when is it 5k my dumb dumb light goes off at 3k
 
Mine is most definitely 5k intervals before the maintenance light comes on.

OP - I use 5 quarts every time I change my oil/filter and my level is fine. When you do change your oil buy a 5 quart jug and use it all. Then check your oil level after a day of driving, I'm sure it'll be fine.

I'm also in the group that doesn't think you really need to change your oil now, I think it could wait. The only reason I would do it now is if you're going to do all your fluids at one time - differentials, transmission, etc.
 
Mine flashes a few hundred before 5k. 5k is the computer generated solid light as far as I can tell. And definitely doesn't flash abnormally until just before that interval.

I can only chalk this up to the chicago public school system and adding 5k...LOL, I am just kidding of course.

I can see no reason why your trucks and only your trucks comes on at 3k. No one else have ever posted about a 3K oil maintenance lamp. Just doesn't make sense.

Well I guess I refer any further questions you may have on why it doesn't make sense to Toyota just posting on what mine has done for the 170k miles of its life and what the 2012 has done in its 3,456 miles of existence. Sorry it baffles you.

BTW kidding or not what does the school system comment have to do with trucks? since we are on location jokes at least I'm not living in the armpit of america with all the fake dagos and their horrible sounding accents and screechy whining women

You must watch too much MTV. Anyone with even a little common sense can realize that nobody from NJ actually talks/acts like that. Those "reality stars" aren't even from this state. Having location set to "Chicago" really gives you no leverage to say anything bad about where someone else lives.

Back to topic, my 4Runner, like every other one that hasn't been changed from factory settings, has the maintenance light come on at 5k miles.

Toyota programs his special before he leaves for some reason. I am just wondering how they know which truck he is buying so it's preprogrammed for him.
 
I haven't a clue what vehicle CODE has, but there hasn't been a Toyota vehicle produced with a whimpy 3k oil change schedule in over a decade. Many current Toyota's have a 10k oil change schedule.

I have no idea where you get 3k, but it certainly isn't normal nor should it be followed. It is an extreme waste of oil and utterly unnecessary.

While everyone else, including oil makers, are working to increase intervals to save everyone money, performance and to save our dear planet a bit of grief; this one car was built with a 3k?

I wish I actually got to watch tv would be very entertaining and relaxing. I speak from the experience when I was in that area during 9/11 the way that accent sounds just makes me want to puke right behind the new yorker accent.

Again sorry you can't grasp that for some reason my dumb dumb light goes on at 3k no reason to lie it. oh well moving on nothing to prove to you. carry on
