Changed plugs & wires today...

As the title states I finally got around to changing my plugs and wires today and this is what I found...

There was a good amount of dirt and crud in the "tubes" and the coil packs were actually quite difficult to remove. There was a lot more on the passenger side then the driver side wondering if this is normal or not? I guess the guy before me definitely wheeled it a few times. Anyways I cleaned them out hopefully it is just contained in there and not in the motor.

Also these are the plugs that were in her, four "Autolite Platinum" and two "Autolite" plugs, definitely need some replacements...

With the new NGK plugs and wires she reallly purrs, can't hardly tell the engine is running when idling! :guitar3:

Hope you applied some "Dielectric Grease" inside the tube of the coil packs and plugs and some "Never Seize" on the thread of the spark plugs...makes it alot easier to remove next time you do this maintenance.

first thing i noticed, might be wrong cause i also just changed the plugs on my bike.
but arent the 3.4 4runners the dual hook looking ones..
on the plugs? i forget what they were called but had two hooks over the spark area thing? HAHA

but yea just pointing that out.

Yeah, the 4Runner plugs should be dual electrode, not single.

I guess the thread title is scaring people away. Yeah, apparently they can run with the single, just not as well as they could. Now that I have the proper plugs and new wires its a lot smoother. Yes I did use the anti-seize and di-electric though the trigger stopped working.

Any thoughts on the dirt/ corrosion looking stuff?

If it wasn't oil residue in the tube, I wouldn't worry except to clean it well.

You did your part by using dual ground plugs, antiseize and dielectric.

I got some plugs just waiting to be installed. Hope mines don't look like that. Which area of Columbia are you from?

Glad someone also got this done. Plan to do the same Saturday to my 4Runner and girlfriends Jeep. Will be going with NGK as well. I think when they put the newer ('98 3.4 99k) engine in, they went with Bosch Platinum. This was last year so going to check it all out and see if I can't fix the gas mileage and idle purr as well.

If I remember to take pics I will post...depends on when the brewskies start opening though. ;-)

Yeah, they are autolite, corrected original post. Glad to hear that there shouldn't be too much to worry about. Just filled her up for the first time since installing the plugs and wires so we'll see how many miles I get out of this tank, so far my record is 330.

Now that you've cleaned the tubes and swapped in the recommended equipment, just take a look in them after a few days and see how they look inside.
