Changed Thermostat, coolant running hot

Just finished changing my t-stat and took it for a 10 minute test drive. My transmission was running fine but I noticed that my coolant was at about 212 - it varied from 208 to 217 (the end of my drive). I was running at about 180-203 before. Any ideas? I burped the radiator, heat works. Temperature outside is roughly 75.

The thermometer has an orientation to it. The FSM says it needs to be installed in the 6:00 position, but other shop manuals say 12:00.

It is consistently observed that things run about 10 degrees hotter when it's installed at 12:00. Try turning it 180 degrees, see if that sorts you out.

Shoot, figured that might be it. I had to reinstall it last minute and can't remember whether I put it at 12 or 6. I thought that would only affect the ATF temp though, rather than the coolant temp. Makes sense that hotter coolant makes for a hotter trans. Thanks for the help.

I just did my tb and water pump. I used an after market t-stat and it ran 208*. Switched it back to a OEM stat with jiggler at 6 o clock and i'm back to 188*

I've got an OEM t-stat - pretty sure I installed it at 12, even though I knew it needed to go at 6. That's what I get for not double-checking my work. I just haven't drained the fluid yet - most likely have to replace it all since I can't get my skid plate off due to stripped screws and my skid plate is filthy - so I'll probably get to it on Monday. I'll let you all know if it's simply the jiggle valve or something more - hitting 217 on the coolant concerned me quite a bit, considering it was a decent temperature outside and I wasn't driving up massive hills or anything...

Flipping the jiggle to the 6pm position will absolutely give you about 10 degrees cooler readings, no ifs, ands or buts but why, I dunno but I know it does.

How do you change your oil? and not screws ,, bolts

Yeah, mixed up screws and bolts. Oil change is simple - I'm not reusing it. I drop the bolt on the oil pan (there's a hole in the skid to access it) and drain away. I can't reuse the coolant if I drain it because the way the plug sits, rather than dropping straight down into a pan or bucket, it hits the skid plate and picks up dirt, oil, etc. Not a big deal, I just need to buy another gallon of red from the dealership before I flip my t-stat.
