changing a frame

Looking at a 99 sr5 4wd v6. vehicle looks good, runs well 240k miles. big problem its from Michigan, frame is rusted badly. The good news, I have a frame. Big question, how hard is it to do a frame swap? Just something I havent done.

As for price, it would probably sell around here in good condition for 3500. How much should I pay for it? Probably not a smart financial move either way I know.

If the frame is bad enough to warrant changing you might be able to convince them that the truck is unusable/unsafe as is. Offer them a real low ball offer, then you have money to spend on the swap.

I've done it, in my backyard. I don't recommend it, unless you are real determined and have a lot of time to burn. With a lift, it can be a lot easier. Be prepared to spend on a lot of components that may never go back together, like shocks, exhaust, etc.

$400 sounds about right. Depends on how willing he might be to part it out. That's your competition.

I believe [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] did a frame swap. It is a ton of work and you'll need some way of lifting the body off.

If the frame is rotted there is no way it's worth anywhere near $3500. If you are willing to do the work, I'd offer him like $600 tops.

If it can be a side project where you can take your time and you get it for cheap, go for it.

Take it from a guy who drives an extremely rusty 4runner - RUN. Every bolt will be a battle. And you'll have weird things fail that would normally last the life of the vehicle... If you're up for a frame swap, go for it. But don't say I didn't warn you. Lol

about what I thought everyone would say. I think I will take a pass, I was thinking of about 750, I could sell the wheels and motor for that. Plus the 4wd system. 3500 is what it would sell for fixed. Had time while waiting for this dam Hurricane, just playing online. looking at another 2000 limited with a blown engine. guy wants 800. probably more up my alley

Buy the two, swap the motor, then sell the sad rusted blown engine leftovers to a junkyard for scrap prices.

Its a lot of work.
If you have to ask how hard it is, it's probably too much for you.

If cosmetics are good, start at 600 and see where he goes. Then see if you can get the rotten truck for 400 and you have an engine and spares. I don't see a profit when you factor in time, but you'll have a nice 4Runner.
