Changing Brakes

I have a '97 4Runner SR5 V6 5-speed with 92K miles. I think it is about time I look into replacing the pads and rotors upfront and the shoes in the back. Since I have been towing a boat I recently purchased (only about 1,700 lbs. total including boat, motor and trailer - but trailer does not have brakes) a couple of months ago, I felt it important that I pay close attention to this matter. Is this an easy task? Is there a good manual or a website I can refer to help in the process. I'm pretty good with good with tools and probably have everything necessary. Thanks for you comments.

okay, does anyone have a shop they would recommend in the Bay Area for brakes if I don't have the time to change them myself?

I've not changed the brakes on a Toyota, but have done it many times on American brands. It's generally pretty easy.

Rotors and drums can be turned at a machine shop or at some Pep Boys locations. Replacing pads is simple -- if it's a drum brake, just do one side at a time so you have the other side as a reference.

Disc brakes, you need to push the piston (some vehicles have two) back, then the pads should pop right off.

Don't know the Bay area (presume you mean the SFO area), but here I would recommend either the mechanic I trust or a brake specialty shop.
