Changing Bulbs in A/C unit!

Have you ever had a bulb in your AC unit go out. It can be pretty annoying. This write up describes the way to fix that issue by replacing the bulbs.



Parts needed:

Part number: 81850-35040 Description: lamp assembly These are the larger ones with the white base-these go in the display

Part number: 81850-35050 Description: lamp assembly These are the smaller ones with the black base-these are for the buttons

This is my before shot. Notice that the display is completely burned out and can not be seen at night. The lights for the buttons were fine but I went ahead and replaced them while I had it all dissassembled.



BEFORE: AC unit before-display lights not working

Step #1: Disessemble the dash.

Step #2: Unscrew the screws holding the AC unit to the vehicle and carefully pull the AC unit out,

Remove the AC unit by unplugging the cables.

Remove the two small screws on both sides of the AC unit.

Using a screwdriver, carefully separate the black front from the white housing by carefully prying on the tabs. They are plastic so be careful!

Remove the light bulbs by slightly twisting the bulb to the left with a screwdriver and then pulling them out.

Replace the light bulbs and reassemble.

nice write up! for those of you that want a custom color the little bulbs in LED terms are a neo wedge type III or 3mm bulb and the bigger ones are Neo Wedge type 4 or 4mm
 
Interesting... I have a 2000 SR5 Sport but my A/C unit looks totally different. I don't have the screen like you have but istead two rotating knobs for temp and vent control.

Wondering if my bulbs will be different. Anyone know?
 
the 3 buttons on top take 2 of the smaller bulbs and i think that your HVAC have 3 bulbs. (the bigger ones) i have the 3 knobs so its a little different but in reality having extra bulbs isn't a bad thing. you have some back ups
 
I was wondering about getting new bulbs in. Anyone put anything other than the stock green? I was thinking of going with white if it works.

Great write up! I did that right after I bought mine, fairly easy to do, but this will help anyone who hasnt had to do it yet.

idk i was asking because i wanted to get blue if available but if they are only available at the stealer then i guess green will have to do

oh and fyi it appears that your runner is missing a door in your signature picture. just thought id give you a heads up if you hadnt noticed :lmao:
 
I replaced mine with LEDs about a year ago. Now they barely work. They flicker on and off randomly. Not sure if that's a problem with the LED, or the connection at the PCB. Either way, I think I'll be replacing these with regular old bulbs soon (minus the green condoms).

Lmao... as for the lights, Theres alot of people on here that have done led lights which I found out after the fact.. Where they got them I dont know. I didnt even think to look around for leds, My drive light was out at the time also so I just went to dealer and got bulbs for everything.
 
yeah there are dozens of threads on the LED swap (changing the color of your lights) I think autolumination,com sells the colored halogen bulbs just dont get their LEDs

If your LEDs are flickering it is a definite sign they are done for some good LED sites are SuperbrightLED's.com and VLEDS. i know quite a good bit on these just from doing them all the time so feel free to ask questions, Im not to familar with what years take what bulbs but i can prob tell what bulb it is with a picture
 
Cool, the pics help! I'll definitely be looking at this when i swap my bulbs out. Ive been searching for over a year now trying to find what type of bulbs I need for my ac/heater/whatever else. I have found bulb #s for 1999-02s but haven't been able to find any for the 1996s...they have a different layout. I even called the stealership to see if they can look up on their computer the bulb numbers for my 96 and after being transferred to different departments like 4 times, they parts guy said its a toyota bulb so it wont have a normal bulb number.....Anyone know?

ok first question. i have the same bulbs as in OP and i want it to be blue. should i go with bulbs or leds? and second, would there be any modification i would need to do if leds are the way?

I got my neo-A's and neo-B's from superbrightleds.com...so apparently they are of good quality. Not sure why they are so flaky...again, it could be the connection to the PCB or the neo base.

Curious if there are instructions for dash disassembly? One side of the lights have failed on my '00 Limited, and the (stock) stereo lights flicker (mostly off) but sometimes come on after a bump.

I'd like to replace the HVAC and stereo lights in one shot. These instructions/photos are great, but I'm curious what's involved with disassembling the dash. Thanks
