Changing front shock assemblies on '02 4runner?

In my Haynes manual it suggests that due to the front springs being compressed, this can be dangerous since you have to use spring compressor etc. and the assy. should be handled with care when removed. It also suggests replacing the entire shock+spring assembly may not that be much more expensive than replacing just shocks and can be a easier/safer way to go.

Any suggestions on doing this job and which brand/model assembly to use on an 2002 4WD SR5? I've had a lot of luck buying from Amazon.com (brake pads, rotors, catalytic converter, O2 sensors all with free shipping).

Also, this may be a dumb question but since the assembly is compressed and considered dangerous to handle, is there a safe way to dispose of the old assemblies?

I'm a DIY'er so I'm no expert but have done my front brakes/rotors, a few sections of exhaust system, O2 sensors. I' m wondering how tough this job is.

Thanks, Dave.

It's only dangerous if you release the spring pressure without the proper tools/care, there's a lot of power in that spring. When I installed my '99 springs, I removed the front spring/strut assembly, and took it to a shop and had them swap springs for me, then put it back in myself. It's not bad to do if you outsource the hard part.

There is no danger IMO discarding the entire assembly as a whole, it's not going to come undone randomly in the trash.

How tough was it? I see Monroe has Quick Struts 171351 (R/L fronts) + Sensa Trac 37157 (rears) with a rebates right now. I'm really tempted to try this. A Cleveland, OH chain outfit quoted me $775 for the entire job with alignment! It would cost me less than half (even though I'd still need an alignment after).

Did you have to remove the skid plate or sway bar as this article mentions How to replace front shocks on 2002 toyota 4runner - FixYa.

Thanks again. Dave
