Changing gear ratios in an A4

I have the Auto 4 Speed, and I know that one big thing that slows down stock cars is the gear ratios. Obviously the M5 speeds are quicker due to closer ratios, but is there any way to change the ratios on an A4 to produce less of a drop in RPMs when it changes gears? It feels like a slug when it drops into second gear...
