Changing oil in 2003 4Runner

This may have already been discussed. I experienced on my first oil change that during the drain plug removal how fast the oil drained. It started so fast that the plug blew over to the side of the plate covering. At first I thought the plug fell into the oil catch container. I had left the oil fill cap on during this and man did the oil flow out fast. Is there a better way to remove the oil drain plug and reduce the flow during this step ?

I usually just try to remove the drain plug slowly so that I can feel when the threads have quit and then twist the drain plug to the side and let it flow. It's a little messy, but I prefer to use my fingers once I have loosened the plug with a wrench. This way I can feel whats going on. Just another one of the challenges of DIY maintenance.

I use a Mityvac oil extractor and suck it out through the dipstick hole. I still have to remove the metal plate to get to the filter, but overall it's much cleaner using the Mityvac.

Thanks to all for your replies. You have given me ideas to think about. I have used Fumoto oil drain valves in the past, but do not have one for this 4Runner. The location design and cover plate seemed to restrictive for a Fumoto.

SteveM, how much oil do you leave behind?

I can't answer because I've never removed the drain plug after sucking out the oil. The dealer did a FREE oil change last week, so I'm a ways away from needing another one (5K miles). I'll try it next time and report back.

On other cars (BMW 3 series mostly) others have tried this and gotten an ounce or so after sucking out the oil. I really bought the Mityvac because the BMW can be changed entirely from the top with it - the oil filter is a cartridge type that is up near the valve cover. Plus, the BMW is so low it's a major operation to get underneath.

I still add 6 quarts or so when changing the 4Runner, so it can't be leaving much behind.
