Changing WS transmission fluid in 2005 T4R

I have around 65,000 miles (recently bought used T4R) but based on not knowing how much towing the previous owner did, I'd like to change the WS transimission fluid. The dealerships charge between $300-$360 here in the Denver area for a complete flush and refill. Hearding scary stories about transmisssion shop flushes, should I be concerned about anything at the dealership?

A drain is $120 but that only removes 3-4 quarts. If I replace all the fluid, I probably will not have to mess with this for another 70K-90K miles. Has anyone had any bad experiences with a complete flush on their T4R? Any other ideas or thoughts?

Are you a DIY guy? It's a bit tedious but very doable.

Yeah, I called three dealership and the thiefs quoted me $300-$360 for the flush and $110-$135 for the drain (3-4 quarts, they think). I'll call a couple of the Toyota-only shops tomorrow.

I change my oil but that's about it. I could look at the DIY instructions and see what is involved and then decide, based on the complexity and cost of the WS fluid. I'm sure they will charge an insane price for it. Still, $350 plus tax is a lot of money for a tranny fluid change.

Check the non-dealer Toyota specialty shops. WS has been out a while and they should be able to handle just fine for a lot less money. Lexus uses it too. It's not just a 4Runner thing...
 
Yeah, there are a couple of non-dealer shops that only work on Toyotas. I'll call and talk to them. You would think they would be a bit more reasonable but their service departments are money makers, even in this crappy economy, I suppose.
 
I just got this done at the dealer today. I'm a big DIY guy, dif/transfer case fluid, oil, lift, shocks/springs, alarm, stereo, speakers but the transmission flush, despite looking incredibly easy was only 80 dollars more if i went with the dealer. And piece of mind was worth it for me.

The dealer charged me 160 for everything.
 
Try Toy Car Care in Centennial. I used to use them alot and have had awesome results. They service only Toyota and Lexus.
 
Thanks, I'll call them as well as another shop (I forget the name). Either way, the dealer will not get my business at these prices. Heck, they quoted me $190 for the front/rear diffs and transfer case.

There is no need to change the fluid (OEM) unless it gets damaged (WS trans). There is an idiot light on the dash that will indicate a problem. Don't waste your time and money. If you change the fluid, you will never have to change it again (OEM or Amsoil).

Oddly enough we happened to have this same conversation with a local dealer today. My girlfriend has an '05 v6 4Runner that she recently bought. Had it in for some window tinting and to repair some bumper damage I'd done to it (oops!). Service guy recommended waiting till 100k miles (probably a year or so for us), and quoted us around $140 to do it.
 
Ugh, Toy Car Care also quoted me $350. I'll call the other two tomorrow. It's around $12 per quart and $200 worth of labor.:jaw drop:

You may want too get service info from someone else, there is no way this can be done for $140 and I'd like to see where it says this even needs to be done at 100K miles.

They are quoting around $120-$145 for just the drain (3-4 quarts) so that may be what the other poster was getting a quote for. If I'm doing it, I'm replacing the whole thing so I don't have to worry about that again for a long time.
 
4 Gen T4R Transmission fluid change

To all friends who want to know how to replace the transmission fluid. This is what I did: and its EASY. (my first time as well).
I have Black 2007 4runner Limited 4x4, V-6, Navigation, w/75400 miles.

1. Check out the "You tube" postings for some good tips.
2. It requires the Toyota WS (world standard) grade transmission fluid for smooth shifting operation. it cost $9.20 per quart at the dealership.
3. Toyota insist you never have to change the WS fluid but, if you want to feel good about it, just perform the drain and re-fill. it would only take less than 3 quarts ($27.60) and about 30 min. of your time.
4. You will need 24mm socket for refill plug and 14mm socket for drain plug.
5. You will also need a hand held pump to replace the fluid.
My dealership wanted $350 for this and I did it for $27.60 (pump cost $10).
Now I have the most smooth operating T4R transmission. Good Luck!:party:

That still leaves 8-9 quarts of old fluid in the trans. you would have to do this up to 4 more times every couple hundred miles to fully cycle all the old fluid out
