Charcoal cannister VSV

It sounds like I have a problem similar to many posts on this forum. I have a 2001 T4R with approx 67000 miles. About 2000 miles ago the check engine light, VSC TRAC, and TRAC OFF came on. A new gas cap worked for a short while, but the light has now come back on 3 times. The first two times the dealer said they couldn't find a problem and reset the code. This time the dealer says the code is P0446 and they found that the charcoal cannister VSV is sticking open and needs replaced. They are quoting $552.25 which I assume includes the charcoal cannister and VSV.

My questions are:
1) Is this really the problem?
2) Does it really need to be fixed?
3) Can I just have the VSV replaced without replacing the whole charcoal cannister as this seems like a much cheaper option?

I really appreciate any advice.

it is needed yes. You cant just replace the vsv because what is happening is the charcoal in the canister is coming apart and getting stuck in the vsv. Replacing the vsv will only help for a short time before getting plugged again. That price should include the canister. ASk them about the emissions warranty. I believe it should be good for either 70 or 80K miles or 7-8 years. Whichever comes first. Do a little research about that and find out for sure. You may be able to get it done for free

I have 38k miles on my '06 Limited V-8 4WD, and the Check Engine Light and the VSC warning lights lit up unexpectedly. The dealership checked the codes and told me the same thing, that the charcoal cannister was bad and will have to be replaced. Thankfully the extended warranty will cover the expense.

The service manager said that topping off the gas tank (which I usually do) can contribute to the charcoal cannister failiure. Maybe I'll stop topping off the tank, just round it up to the next whole dollar, which won't be hard with today's gas prices!

Just don't fill it up into the neck;I myself let it click once then go to the next click and call it full. Gas needs room to expend when it gets hot and if the tank is overfilled it causes high pressures in the gas lines and forces fuel into the charcoal canister and will ruin it quick.
