Cheap good and pretty wheels

The FJ Cruiser came with steel wheels in the lowest cost “build your own” trim. They chose steel because it was the cheapest... not the best. Fun fact, the TRD Pro trucks ship from the assembly plant to the port with steel wheels. The wheels and tires are scrapped when the vehicles are fitted with the Pro wheels and tires.

What is your point exactly? Or are you just reenforcing my statement? The OP wants cheap capable wheels and tires. EDIT: oh and pretty

Toyota would never use steel wheels. Except on every BOF it sells. (A set of trail wheels for $300 is probably better and cheaper for most use, but nothing wrong with some cheap steel wheels. Weld on some beadlocks if you want to get serious about playing in the rocks.)

If not - OP - don't do this. There's no way 15" wheels will fit unless you space them out to equivalent of around 2" backspacing. Even then - probably not. And if you do - the geometry in the front is all wrong. They'll rub horribly even with stock tires size due to the scrub radius. And using a 6 to 5 lug adapters are two piece assemblies (per hub) that cost more than a decent set of wheels. Basically this is all wrong on every level. If it's not a joke - I hope you can return them easily or find someone local who wants them. They're not going to work.

well it wasnt a joke. i kinda feel bad and stupid now. im getting a lift, so maybe then everything will fit. we will see. I hope it all works, if it doesnt, I will buy 6 lug 16" steelies with a high offset. I like the "poke" look. Thats my taste. hopefilly everything works out, and if not, I might be able to get back 90% of what I spent.

Don't feel bad. Be happy you found out before you spent a lot of money. It'd be a lot worse to find out after you had bought tires and spacers that it won't work.

If they haven't shipped yet - cancel your order. They'll probably let you cancel without any fees.

The problem is that the brakes are too big to fit even 16" wheels unless you have a ton of offset. The problem with having that offset that is that the scrub radius is a big problem with these trucks. Basically turn your steering wheel all the way one direction and then look how close the tire is to the inner fender. Then go to the other side and look how close it is in the backside to the mud flap. Now imagine if you move the wheel out like an offset wheel will do. Even 1 or 2 inches of offset usually means they don't fit without major rubbing issues. If you go far enough to clear 15 or 16" wheels - it's like 4 inches or so. You won't be able to turn.

The nice thing is that you have huge brakes!

It's just the nature of the front geometry.

well thank you. I guess i was a little impulsive! I'm probably gonna do a mock-up today, and if it doesnt work, it doesnt work! i guess you gotta make mistakes to learn sometimes. I'm just out here trying to make my car a little different from everybody else's. I hope I can work everything out, thanks for the help!

With a glut of take-off alloys around for cheap there is no performance reason to run heavier wheels and a heavy tire combo.....all that sprung weight is just bad. Most of us have a set of SR-5 alloys and Groundtreks rotting on the back patio!

I didn’t say you said they were the best. I was just commenting on why steel wheels have been found on those trucks in the past. They are inexpensive and functional. So inexpensive that Toyota throws them in the trash when they build the Pro trucks because it is cheaper to buy them again than ship them back to the factory. (Not everyone has seen those pics... it is buried in a 500 page thread, IIRC).

Getting steel wheels isn’t necessary bad or good because it depends on the individual need. They are definitely heavier and cheaper than alloy wheels, though, and when you can find takeoffs for super cheap, steel doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I would have to admit, I'm not looking at changing my TRDPro wheels anymore... I was highly overestimating their value !
I guess my brain stuck to the date when my wheels where hard to find and their value skyrocketed. I came to find out that you can now but them for 170 a pop. Which makes them a lot less valuable to my eyes and therefore I'm not in a rush to change them anymore. I had done the same trick with my previous vehicles wheels and made a lot of $ in the process.

I guess I can't just make that twice

Although, I doubt they simply throw them away. That ship is returning to the same port it picked all those new cars up in, I would wager they simply load into a container and reuse them. Why you may ask would I think such a crazy thought, the exact same reason they now have separate wiring harnesses across most trims, to save money. I simply refuse to believe that they would throw away a min of 20,000 wheels and tires (guessing that just for TRDP "special" color production numbers of what 5000 so they say, then however many standard color bolt-ons they do) Even at $5.00 a wheel and tire that is still $100,000, sure chump change for a company the size of Toyota, they also have a tighter production ecosystem than McDonalds.

I believe the dude that posted the pics mentioned that they were thrown in the dumpster and a coworker was fired for trying to get them. That said, I wouldn’t be shocked if they worked out a deal with someone to buy the tires as second hand.

Just one quick tip - take off the center caps and maybe just leave them at home. Mine were destroyed about day 2. And they're almost as expensive as a whole set of takeoffs to replace. They stick out and are usually the fist think to get crushed.
