Cheap Tires?

Is there no such thing? I feel like if you want anything even slightly badass, you have to pay $1200+ And then if you wanted to change your stock rims on top of that you are looking at well over $2K. Am I missing something about this and you guys are getting them at a different price, or do I just need to suck it up?

Also as a side note, I found this company for retreads that seem to be pretty legit. For anyone that is staying in the 15"-18" wheel range, this might help you get to some new rubber before I do. They should be pretty reliable, I found the company on the iH8Mud site. They usually know their stuff. I have no affiliation with them BTW. www.treadwright.com

I would say no to the retreads.

What size tire are you looking for? The bigger the rim the more expensive the tire in general.

I got a set of Duratracs for $800. They are pretty aggressive, yet I can still use them on a vehicle that gets driven everyday.

There are plenty of other choices too for less than $1200.

A cheaper way to get new rims is to use ones from other Toyota vehicles.

Ya I don't know how I feel about the retreads either, I was just putting that out there for someone who might be comfortable with them.

And this is all hypothetical, but the rim I was is 20" and for now, the tires i want are a 305/55 R20 or 33/12.50 R20 and then when I get some more lift, I'd probably like a 35/12.50 R20. Now the rims are only like $140/pc but tires?! The cheapest I've found of what i want:

Toyo Open Country MT: $338/pc
Nitto Mud Grappler: $305/pc

So then I thought maybe I could find some basic BFG AT's or MT's for cheaper, but those turned out to be the same price or more haha.

I wouldn't just change the wheels to some other toyota wheel, that to me seem's pointless when I have 5 perfectly good ones on my truck that don't look bad at all. All I'm saying is if you want to put the wheels and tires that you really want on your truck, you gotta pay bug bucks. I guess I'm just pissed off that I don't make enough money to afford that right now haha

Those look nice! But as I said, I just don't see spending money on more stock rims when I already have some. The only reason I would change the rims is for style, and really, everything from toyota is the same general style to me....if that makes any sense. But that does look pretty sweet. I'm gonna have to suggest that to my buddy with this 3rd gen stockers.

It's that rim size that is killing you. For some reason (I assume manufacturing costs) tires for a 20" rim are NOT cheap...

I threw out that idea because adding wheels from another model can really make a difference and is cheaper a lot of the time. TRD also offers wheels that look pretty good, but I don't think any come in 20"...maybe the BBS.

It's more for looks than for offroad. My truck is a 2WD for now, and until that changes, I'm just looking to pick up girls on the FSU campus haha. But ya the reason for the 20s and no bigger is because of the future offroad factor. I think you can still do some pretty serious wheeling with 20s with 35s. Just look at the attached image of my neighbor.

Anyway ya I'm sure there will have to be some hacking, and more lifting, and whatever else to get them to fit. But again, this is going to have to be pretty far into the future so whatever.

Would you believe it's going to be around the same price or a little bit less for me to convert to 4WD as it is to get my "ideal" rim/tire package?

It's actually better to just sell your current 2wd car rather than convert it to 4wd.

Ya that's what they say but I just don't see how that works. I can only sell my truck for a fraction of the price it's worth right now. And everyone else want's full price for theirs. For less than $2500 I can have everything I need for 4WD. Besides, how much fun would that be? And I could say that I did it One day...

And ya it was for sale on eBay but it never sold. I've been trying to buy it from him for a long time. We once agreed on a price, but then his wife decided she liked his 100 series better than her CR-V and so then he decided he wanted to keep it. Now he want's to sell it again so I'm going to try to work that out when I go home again. That's the only truck I would sell my truck for. Problem is getting the parentals to OK it. I paid for my truck and for some reason I still have to get permission to sell it haha that's what you get for your parents paying your insurance :gun4:

I had the pleasure of working in a tire retreading shop for some 15 years and these Goodyear's remind me so much of retreads. The cutoff point where the tread edge meets the casing looks awful . It looks like a 2 piece tire. Ok that's finally off my chest . Our LT retreads came out looking almost the same .

Pay to play. Especially if you purchase 5 if changing sizes and want a full sized spare. For a 20" wheel, your best quality tire against cost will be Cooper Zeon LTZ, Toyo Open Country AT, or Nitto. All will cost $200+ per tire installed.
