Cheap Windshield Glass

Within 1 year I have had 3 small (tiny) chips that have led to huge cracks in 3 different replacement glass.

I have in no other car in my life had a tiny chip turn into a major windshield replacing ordeal.

Within 1 year I have had 3 on the 4Runner. WTF??

When i got mine i was worried about the quality of the windshield too. The dealer said one of the guys cracked the windshield while scraping off some ice that morning :wtf: , (don't remember the weather being really bad) and replaced it with a non-toyota windshield. Do a search and you can find other people complaining of the windshield quality, but i thought they made them thicker a little after 04. Hopefully this one lasts. not to mention "fj cruiser windshield" is a Google Suggested phrase for fj cruiser...

you should try and get them filled immediately!!! It will save you a lot of hassle, you can have someone do it for like 20 dollars. One of the biggest things I have found with replacement windshields is the quality of work some people have, my friend got the window on his corolla replaced and it wasn't done very well and you can hear the wind creeping through the front windshield.

My 4Runner's on it 3rd or 4th windshield. The one just replaced had a golf ball size rock break, a couple stars too big to repair, and a crack going across that was the last straw. I haven't really noticed breaks being much different than they were with the Cherokee. Similar vertical angle I guess.

The F150 had some wind noise after a replacement and we took it back and complained. They said they could pump air into the interior to figure out where the air leak was around the windshield. Either that or a vacuum, I don't recall but they did fix it.

That's just the thing. All 3 have been from a chip so tiny, that it isn't even noticable unless your right up on it examining the entire windshield.

I mean we are talking so small that you would have to run a ball point pin or a push pin tip over the area to notice anything.

To me, that indicates cheap, thin glass.

I would expect better from Toyota for quality.

I had my second windshield replaced two weeks ago. Once week later a rock created a small star in the lower left corner of this third windshield. It was incredibly annoying but there was nothing that I could do about it.

I do not think that the "OEM" glass that they have used on both replacements is anywhere near the quality of the original windshield. I get streaks from the factory windshield wipers quite often.

I also question the strength of the original windshield. My original windshield developed a 7" crack from a very small rock chip.
At least these two replacements have not cracked in the same manner...they have only been chipped from flying rocks.

Mine hit a pebble at 90mph and crack the whole damn windshield 2months after I got my baby. I used Safelite. It's all good now.
