Cheaper Option New Wheels/Tires

So after realizing how limited I am in tire upgrades if i keep my 18" limited wheels i decided to look into new 17" wheels and tires. I found some steelies for 69$ did the math and it will be like 50 bucks more to buy new tires and rims then new tires(at least the ones i want) for the 18"s, plus i get to make some money off selling my 18's.

So heres the question has any one heard of black rock wheels? I was thinking about running either of these Black Rock Wheels 929576040 - Black Rock Series 929 Black Jack Wheel for Vehicles with 6x5.5" Bolt Pattern - Savanna Jones Black Rock Wheels 997526040 - Black Rock Series 997 Type 8 Wheel for Vehicles with 6x5.5" Bolt Pattern - Savanna Jones, in a 17x8 with the 6x 5.5 bolt pattern with 4.5 backspacing, and then throwing on some Dunlop Maxx Tractions in a 265/70R17. I will be installing a 2.5/1.5 lift soon will this combo work with out any rubbing on the fender wall or brake calipers? Any big downsides from going to aluminum to steel? Lastly you guys know anyone running these and have pics? Which ones do y'all think will look better? Thanks in advance

i like the 929s, they may be heavier than aluminum but stronger for offroad, just remember the total weight & load range of those tires + the steelies will make it ride more trucklike but hold up very well offroad. also, if you get backspaceing that pushes the tires farther out, even with the fenders, you may still need to trim. just to give u an idea, heres mine with mkw wheels & 265/70/17, i had to trim & still its close.

thanks for the quick info man. So from those pics im assuming you only had to trim the front of the inner fender wall for the front tires, it doesn't look like you did much. If i do that trimming will i be good to go every where else...contorl arms, brakes ect?
Also do you have any idea how much heavier the 17" steels will be then my 18" aluminums, cant be more then like 10 pounds each right? Do you know will the center bore on these wheels line up aswell? thanks

i didnt cut or trim the inner fender, but moved it 1.5 - 2 in. forward, then trimmed the lower edge of of bumper 3/4 - 1 in. like you said its hard to notice, & is very easy to do. if u use ur stock wheels without wheel spacers with that size it will not rub, it really only happens when spacers are used to push the wheels farther out or with aftermarket wheels that do the same thing. i dont know what the stock rims weigh but i dont think the steelies would be too much more. one thing tho, when the steel gets nicked or exposed to alot a salt, they will rust. & yes, with 265/70/17 & this amount of trimming everything will be good to go, control arms, brakes, etc.
 
After looking at some how to trim threads, and taking a peek under my rig it seems like a no brainer to get some new wheels and tires and do the trimming, I wont have to deal with the mudflaps correct just the front of the front wheel fenders? Im waiting to hear back from Black Rock to confirm the 17"s will clear my rotors and the center bore is the same then I will be putting in the order, I just wish it wasn't a 3-4 week wait for em to be built.

Got an email back from black rock apparently the wheels wont work, so now I'm going to look into some others steelies maybe the fj ones, or take it a step up and get some atx's. Any one know a place to get some reasonable priced steelies for the 4runner?
 
you may be able to get centering rings & use the right nuts for the steellies to work.

Just an FYI but there are a good amount of AT tires for 18''s now.

Several sizes will fit:

265/65R18 BFG, Bridgestone Revo, Hankook Dynapro ATM, Toyo Open Country AT, Nitto's
275/65R18 Toyo Open Country AT, Nitto's, Michelin's, Goodyear Silent Armor
285/65R18 Toyo Open Country AT, Nitto's, Cooper Zeon LTZ


I've replaced my wheels on my last 4Runner and dreaded the decision, this is why. Our 4Runners last a very long time and aftermarket wheels I've found don't stand up the way OEM's do. After 100-150k those wheels might look not so great, I know this was the case with the American Racing wheels I bought last. But I guess to the fact that in the NE salt & snow are harsh conditions didn't help but OEM wheel's seem to stand up better.


With your plans don't forget you have to pay to take apart your stock setup to get the TPMS senors out of the wheels. Either that or buy new sensors in the wheels and have them programed into the TPMS system (more $).
 
Yes there are some nice A/T's out there for the 18's but I find they are more expensive then tires for the 17's I think (with some sketchy math) I will probably make enough savings on my first 2 sets of 17" tires to cover the expense of the new wheels(plus if I kept the 18's I would powdercoat and add spidetrax eventualy). At this point Ive just got to ensure that the 17's I want will clear my limited brakes and I will be putting in the order for some Dunlop maxx tractions followed by an order for some 17's. So some one please confrim what I all ready belive to be true 17"s will clear the rotors on an 06 limited and that these wheels will work and I will be on the road to happieness.:biggrin2:
 
Just ordered my tires. Ordering wheels and lugs tommorow, thanks for all the help guys. I have a set of 5 18' limited wheels that will be going for sale soon if anyone would suggest a good selling price i would appreciate it, one of them is brand new, and has a brand new tire the rest have about 3k+ left on tires and a little bit of paint peeling but not really noticable I was thinkin 400.
