Check engine light and vsc light

Going down the road today and all of a sudden my vsc light comes on and my check engine light comes on. The 4 runner is an 02 sr5 4x4. V6 140,xxx on it nothing has been down to it, well after work went and put a code reader on it and it gave me the code p0442 which is (evap) small leak right? Any ways does any one know how I can fix this or what I need to check so that I can fix this thanks for your help.

Theres a long thread about this on here.

But the jist of it is that it could be that your gas cap is not on all the way tight.

I had the same thing happen to me, however I ended up running half a tank of E85 and the O2 sensor and EVAP system was going crazy.

Check your gas cap, and reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery.

Well I did the reset on ECM and tighten the gas cap no dice still came back on any other ideas?

I've had those lights on for the last 20k miles. Fixed it with electrical tape over top of them. :boxer:

It could be the solenoid, but I would check for cracks around the vacuum lines first.

i just went and filled up the runner and all the lights went off not sure what it is know.

most likely it's a gas cap issue. same thing happened to me as my old gas cap was not creating enough seal when closing. replaced the gas cap had no more issue.
