Check engine light. Code reader needed.

I have a 2000 , 4runner LTD, 3.4, with a Check engine light on. running good. Auto Zone cannot test. Too old I guess. test point on top of engine.
Suggestions.?

I would like to get an inexpensive tester , or find a place to read the code.
I am in Daphne, Al. // Mobile.

Autozone is giving you the run around. In all seriousness though grab yourself a ODBII Bluetooth reader on Amazon and get Torque Pro. $25 and you have a code reader and so much more.

Edit: Ohhh I see their mistake. They thought the diag port on the intake manifold was the only port. That's for some Toyota advanced diag tool. There is an ODBII port on the trans tunnel side of the driver footwell. They are probably so used to seeing them on the door side that they missed it.

The OBD2 connector is there on all 3rd gens from 1996 to 2002.

It's sticking down on drivers side under dash next to the climate control radio section. :)

You could try and get Orielly Auto Parts, on Daphney and 98, to read your code.
Investing in your own OBD2 reader is the best way than using the parts stores code readers.
 
I second the bluetooth OBD II reader and the torque app. I know in the past it only worked on android though. Is it on IOS devices now too?
 
ScanGauge II is always a great choice as well, but it also serves other functions. It can give you readouts on trans temp, engine coolant temp, voltage, etc in addition to reading CEL's.
 
Tell the Vatozone guys they are high....

The location of the OBII port is codified.... they're all in the same area.....lol.

Don't let them do that to you along with the brain damage that a freebie DTC (diagnostic trouble code) brings.

If you're serious about diagnosis, just go buy an OBDII dongle. The blue driver is awesome, and you don't have to be a master level tech to know what to do with it.

There's lots of great choices these days. Somewhere between 25 and 150$ should get you what you need and plug into practically any car from 96 on. I have a bunch of money invested in AutoEnginuity software honestly the only time I bust it out is when I have to do actuation. The rest of the time the BlueDriver is just too handy and easy for me.

Innova is another great option. Whole catalog of price points and features available.

Just my two cents from a guy that's been plugging into OBD's since the last millennia.

Another vote for the Blue Driver, excellent and super easy to use and understand.
 
For android I use TorquePro
My IPhone I use DashCmd
I also have an Innove 3130 and a MacMentor.

I use the Innova the most
