Check Engine Light On, now Off????

Hi all! You guys are the ones I come to when I have questions. That is a no-brainer right there. So here we go....

1996 4runner 4x4, 3.4 l, 5 speed manual. 140,2XX miles on her. At 122,000 she got new timing belt, belts, plugs, wires, tranny flush, radiator flush, and new tires.

Change the oil every 3,000 miles and all service done at Toyota dealership.

My "check engine" light came on. Ran it into the shop and they hooked it up to the machine and said "O2 sensor needs replacing" and they quoted me $356 (which includes the $80 to hook it up to the computer).

I couldn't get it into the shop for a couple of days and now the light just went off yesterday.

So could it have been a glitch? should i replace or wait until the light comes back on? what kind of damage could I end up doing if I don't change? Should I replace both if I am replacing 1? I believe I heard them say there are two O2 sensors on bank 1.

I am by no means a mechanic and to be honest I could change oil and a tire and that is probably my extent of mechanical knowledge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could just be dirty gas - the same thing happened to me in the Outer Banks where I got a CEL, got it diagnosed saying it was an 02 sensor, and then after a couple of fresh tanks of gas I was golden w/ no error codes
