Check Engine Light

I was driving home last night and my check engine light came on. It's never done that before. I pulled over, popped the hood, and had a look/listen. Nothing out of the ordinary, no leaks or burning smells, nothing. What do I do next? Take it to a shop? Buy a code reading tool? Any advice? :moping:

Go to autozone and have them pull the code. We are here to help you get whatever it is solved. I have to go clear an o2 code now that shows up every couple weeks if I push her a little. Oh, and if it helps my friend drives an Audi and his light will come on if he even shuts the door to hard haha. GL...

Take it to one of the national auto part chains (Advance Auto, Auto Zone)
They will pull the code for free for you, and tell you what the code is.

When you get the code, do your own research on it because they will try to tell you what it is and it's most likely wrong info. "My own experience anyway"

It's may be either an O2 sensor gone bad (I typically replace an O2 sensor about every 150k miles or so; 4 high mileage toyotas to chose from!) or your MAF sensor is dirty or bad.

What mods, if any, do you have? Cleaning the MAF is simple. If it needs replaced, screw the dealerships couple hundred buck charge and go to an auto parts store. About $75 with exchange and 15 minutes of your time.

Thanks for your help lads. The only mods I've done under the hood are the deckplate and IRS. I do have 165k's on the clock so maybe the MAF sensor IS bad. Unfortunately we don't have auto zone in my area, maybe the state, but I will try other shops that are similar this weekend. I've been thinking about getting my own scan tool. I think Costco has them for about $90 but until then I'll swing by a shop. Thanks again. I'll keep you posted. :bigok:

As stated above, it may be the o2 sensor.... I changed it myself, it cost 150 and 15 mins of your time!!

So I went by O'reilly auto and they checked it out for me for free. So nice of them. I got a P0133 - Bank 1 - 02 sensor - slow response. Pretty common. I did a little search and found this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/60339-obd-code-p1033-any-ideas.html

Got the light reset. I'll probably do some cleaning over thanksgiving break of MAF etc and if it comes on again I'll change the sensor as recommended by you guy's. Thanks all for your help. :bluejump:
