Check FRIKIN' engine light is on!

Hi,
My check engine light came on yesterday and it seems like it's not running on all 6. I have done a full tune up within the last 10Kmi and this morning I just changed all 6 plugs. It's still on and it still seems to be running on less than 6 cylinders. I took it to a local mechanic and he says it could be the sensor on top of the air filter. He called an Air Filter Sensor. I don't know if that is the correct name for that or not but does anyone think that he could be on to something?
Oh yea, it's a 1993 3.0 V6

I would double check the obvious first and make sure all wires are tight and secure on the plugs.
Sometimes when replacing spark plugs it's real tough to get the wires off, especially if they've been on awhile, maybe when pulling off the the wires they got damaged inside.
Couple things to think about.
 
Does anyone know what that sensor is on top of the Air Filter is? And does it cause hesatation. Would that being bad cause the check engine light to come on?

Please help. It's getting really bad!
 
Had a problem with check engine light a couple of months ago. The solution was to make sure gas cap was tight and no problem with the rubber seal on the cap. Toyota reversed the rubber seal and lubed it. Problem solved. It seem that if cap not sealed tight it will cause the light to go on. Something to do with pressure .
 
Thanks, I'll check that. However the engine hesitates SO bad I can hardly make it up hills! I did end up changing that sensor on top of the air filter. It's the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Are their any other sensors that may cause hesitation?
 
I noticed that you kept asking about the sensors, and the sensor on top of the air filter is known as the Mass Airflow Sensor. There are several other sensors, but through what you describe, the Throttle Position Sensor sounds like it could be the culprit. It would cause the light and it would cause hesitation. I would run down to youor local AutoZone or the like and see if they had a Toyota code scanner. Plug it into your diagnostic port and it wil start showing codes. Write them down, bring them inside the store and ask the guy behind the counter. If he knows his shit, he could probably tell you what you need. Good luck, Sam.
 
I have replaced the plug wires.

Umm, I don't live in the USA. I live in a small hole of a Caribbean Island that doesn't know dick about mechanics. I took it to three different people one of wich is VERY into 4Runners and they all told me to replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Wich I have done.
Still, the engine runs the same. :bash:

Do you know where the Throtle Position Sensor is?

Well, for anyone who cares:
I did discover a person on the island who has a diagnostic machine! He's telling me it was a code 52 = knock sensor.

Problem:
No parts stores on the island (all 3 of them) have one!

FUCK!

What does the knock sensor do anyways?

Can it cause horrible heasatation and loss of power while going up hills?
 
If you use a K&N type air filter, the oil can gum-up the air-mass sensor wire on 3rd gen 4runners and tacos. Another thing I'd verify the resistance of the spark plug wires is near zero. One time, I had one that was internally broken! Only an ohm meter found the problem.
 
First let me state that I am no expert on Toyotas engines or management systems, but I am familiar with other systems. The knock sensor is to detect detonation in the engine and to tell the computer to make adjustments to stop the detonation as it can seriously damage a motor. Usually a computer will take out timing and/or add more fuel. Either will cut down horsepower, especially the timing. If your knock sensor failed and is signaling a knock or detonation all the time, then the ECU may be taking all the timing out it possibly can and thus causing the hesitation. Some engines' performance are very sensitive to timing. This condition would be abnormal so the computer throws on the light but keeps the engine in running condition to prevent from being stranded.

Another possibility is that you may have a cylinder getting low fuel due to a faulty injector. If the cylinder is not getting sufficient fuel, then it is running lean (too much air and not enough fuel) which could be leading to some slight detonation in that cylinder and constantly tripping the knock sensor, thus the computer might think the sensor is bad. However, the ECU may also have a code for injectors...I do not know. But might want to check the injectors as it seem it is not running on all cylinders.

Just my two cents.....
 
Dudes, my shit engine light comes on at least once or twice a month but goes away within a day or two. Some sensors here and there, or whatever according to AutoZone FREE diagnostic testing. I took it back to dealership only after 3weeks of purchase, and they charged me $40 to tell me the same thing AutoZone told me what was wrong with it. Said they didn't fix it, cuz problem fixed itself, or check light ain't on no more...since then, I refuse to take back to dealership for anything even tho i bought extended PLATNIUM WARRANTY. So until that damn light is on CONSTANTLY and definitely WON'T go away, I will be taking it to my local Autozone or Advance Auto, and try to figure it out from there. Just two weeks ago it was on the whole weekend we were camping. Then my cruise control didn't work anymore. Then last weekend went roughing it with her on a few trails and now cruise works...hmmm...self-fixing toyotas, wow.

That is crap nothing is self fixing if something goes it goes if you throw a CEL and it stays on something is wrong. I would be willing to bet your problem was the gas cap not being on tight enough or needing replacement. that will cause the CEL to periodic coming on and off.

that was meant to be a joke. seriously, i don't know...throttle sensor A, and then a couple other sensors, but Dealership says, no light, no fix.
