Check out my ECM!

So, I think I may have found the reason my 4runner took a crap after a recent car wash. I just removed the ECM, and found this:

Needless to say, I think I need a new one.

Where is the best place to get one? And will I need to do anything special when I hook up the new one? Reprogram anything?

This sucks the big one.

There must be a leak around the windshield somewhere that is letting water in under the dash. There is evidence of water (deposits) in that area. Son of a...

Well, I'm glad I didn't waste money on a new MAF.

Anyone know how to determine which ECM I need? Looks like there are several for 1999:

1999 4-Runner 89661-3D060

1999 4-Runner 89661-3D580

1999 4-Runner 89661-3D550

1999 4-Runner 89661-3D570

1999 4-Runner 89661-3D600

1999 4-Runner 89666-35420

1999 4-Runner 89666-35420

1999 4-Runner 89666-60260

I found one on eBay, but I'm not sure it'll work with my truck. They say it's for a 99 4x4, but they don't mention california emissions or not.
It's number 89661-3D570.

Yeah, tough luck I guess. It was great after I got the keyless entry figured out...now this!

I will call with my VIN tomorrow. I hope it's the one on eBay, so I can get this over with (hopefully) for less than $200.

Now I gotta find the leak!

what the deal with the remanufactured sticker on it? makes me wonder if the previous owner may have had an issue with the computer and the carwash may have simply been a coincidence. Just a thought...

Yeah, it's a reman. unit. Not sure if it was corroded to hell before it was installed in my truck...my guess is no. I found one potential leak area...a spot of rust creeping out from under the windshield seal, just up from the passenger side mirror.

While I have everything out, I'm going to run some tests with water to see if I can get it to penetrate.

There is evidence of water above where the ECM sits...as I mentioned before...so this has likely been a long time in the making.

Here is a discussion about the ECM and where to get it. The OP got one for 160 with shipping.

I have heard that Toyota will replace this free one time if you loose all your keys and can't get in the car. This is for the factory installed alarm I believe (99-02 models). It has something to do with the transponder in the key and they can't reprogram the ecm to accept new ones without at least one key. I never really read that much into it because I have the rs3000 port installed non-transponder system.
Here is the free replacement discussion.

You may want to look into that first.

wow thats pretty nasty, but have you actually opened it up yet? I would pull the case off of the ECU and make sure there isn't any actual water inside, and maybe grab some electronics cleaner and clean it off and try it again. I mean it really depends what the inside looks like, but it might not be as bad as it seems.

Yeah I opened it up. The corrosion is inside as well. The board looked relatively OK, only a few of the components had green corrosion on them. I didn't see any obvious burn marks.

I just bought a new/used ECM off eBay for $135 + shipping.

It's number 89661-3D570. It's an OEM unit.

The one in the pictures above is 89661-3D572-84, which according to my local Toyota dealer is the "latest remanufactured part number". I'm assuming that it replaces the 3D570 and perhaps a 3D571 somewhere in the last 10 years.

Fingers crossed that this is the right one. The sticker on it says 5VZ, 4x4, A/T....but doesn't mention limited trim.

Anyway, until that puppy comes in the mail, all I can do look for the leak, and check system grounds and fuses again.

I don't know if you read my thread but there is a difference in the ecm for transponder equipped vehicles and non-transponder vehicles. You can fool the computer later if you need to but they will be differenent. People found this out when doing engine swaps. Some are also from California equipped cars so they might require modification too.

Yes, I saw that, thank you...but I found no definition for the part number that signifies transponder-equipped cars. I assume most '99's had transponder keys, and since the ECM part number follows the (somewhat vague) pattern of changing only the last number when it is updated/remanufactured...I figured the 3D570 was my best shot.

A new remanufactured ECM is $1,000 from the dealer...I found it for ~$250 elsewhere.

If the one I bought doesn't work, I'll have to look for a used remanufactured unit with the same part number I just took out. It'll still be way cheaper than buying a new ECM.

Oh yeah, good thinking on getting the earlier code so it will be more compatible. I hope this solves your problem, that old ecm really looked nasty. You'll have to make some sort of ventable cover for the new one.

That's one option! I'd like to find the source of the leak first...but if time does not allow, a simple shield would work.

It may be coming from the rust spot or the lower windshield gasket, or the fresh air intake area (where the wipers are)...and I bet not much water comes in during a rain...only when it's got pressure behind it (like a car wash, hey!).

i bought an ECM from a junk yard for my old car back in the day and it worked great. this newer stuff may be more advance though. i had an 86 audi, german engeneering, run on spit and gum and other stufff lol. this is a toyota, tough as nails , will last forever etc. but ya junk yards are risky, you wanna make sure it will work but ya i thought id throw that out there

OK, I think I've come up against the immobilizer problem that was mentioned earlier.

I put the new/used computer in, and attempted to start the truck. It cranks up nicely, but won't fire. Everything else seems to be in order.

I assume the immobilizer cuts the ignition somewhere after the starter? Or, is there something else going on here?

Anyone know what I can do now? Do I have to have it towed to a dealer? Locksmith?

This is just wonderful! :bash:

Your check engine light should illuminate when you try to start it as a light check to show it's working. If any doubts pull the codes, if any. ECM failures are extremely rare.

It happened to me. I definitely had no check engine light. Ebay is your friend in these cases. Find a friend with the same year and model 4runner and swap out the ECMs to see if that is indeed your problem.
