(First pic posted by mjbuzby.) The weight carrying hitch (V6 and early 2003 V8s) is bolted to the last cross member that runs width wise of the truck. That last cross member boxes in the frame. There is no tube on this hitch, only thing there is the receiver under the bumper cutout.
Both hitches have an attachment to the last cross member. If you lie on your back and look up at the inside of the bumper, you'll see what I'm talking about. The difference in capacity is the weight distributing hitch also attaches to frame rails.
