Tell him I am so confident in our Runners that I spent around 6k on the suspension/lift/tires and other mods for my 96 4runner at 185,000 miles.

I will hit 300k on mine, I dont doubt it.

tell him to look around at all the 3rd gen 4runners from 96-02, there are more of those things on the road than all the 96-02 Blazers/exploders/rodeos/Cherokees etc on the road, In fact, a few weeks ago I picked up a friend in boulder, we counted every 3rd gen 4runner from boulder to denver and every competing brand listed above,

the count was something like 25 or 30 to 5 and 3 of those were cherokees...

120K miles? Just getting broken in!

IMHO, the 3Rd Gen.'s were the best engineered trucks made. The engine ( if my source was correct ) was made / designed by Hino ( Toyota's industrial division ) as an industrial quality machine and is of high quality and reliability.
My T100 which has the same engine has over 215K on it. I would drive it across the country today, if I had a reason to :)

Have your Dad do a search on reliability of the 4Runners. Edmunds, Autortrader, etc...all will have high ratings.

My friend that ownes a tranny shop says he almost never gets these in for repair. He lives for Chevys, Dodges and Fords!

As long as regular maint. is performed, and you watch out for the known small issues ( radiator / tranny coolant lines ) etc... and take appropriate action, a 3rd Gen 4Runner will last a LOOOONG time!

Price is high considering i paid 1000 less and my truck had 51,000 miles on it back in august. No rust and no problems with mine.

No rust? I thought all the PA trucks would have some rust. My '02 is from PA and there is some rust under there but it's not too bad. I'm confident this truck is going to last me a long time!
 
I would jump at that truck, especially at that price. Up here (in Canada) the prices are much higher. One of the best deals I saw prior to buying my truck, was a local one owner 99 Limited with just under 100K miles at $13.5K Cdn. I thought about it for a few days then decided I would buy it, but I was too late, it was sold. Even the 4Runners I see in the Seattle area are priced pretty high (although less than here) and also don't last long.

Actually the main problem around here, and in the whole Pacific North West actually, is supply, there are very few 3rd gen 4Runners for sale. When they do come up for sale they are priced at a premium. Everyone wants them, the Explorers/Blazers etc are a dime a dozen.
