Check out this 4Runner for me

Hey guys. I'm trying to swap out my 2WD for a 4WD runner in anticipation of my move out to Boulder after graduation. Take a look at his 4Runner and lemme know what you think.

1999 4Runner Highlander SR5
Asking price: $8,988
Mileage: 126,144

Anything jump out at you guys or does this seem to be a good deal? Obviously if I get more serious about this I'll need to check it out in person and see about stuff like timing belt and any potential rust issues.

Price seems a bit high but within the reasonable range.

Then again it has the awesome hood scoop so that adds, like, 100hp right there. :D

Does it have the locker? If it has a locker I'd say a fair price would be around $7.5k or so. FYI I bought my 99 SR5 last July with 117k, automatic and locker and my price was right at $8k, which I consider quite reasonable.
 
Check the underneath and make sure rust isn't too bad but if you can get it closer to $8k then it would be a solid deal for both parties since the Highlander models aren't getting easier to find.
 
Transmission is automatic.

Ron, did the Highlanders come standard with the sunroof? The listing says it has a sunroof but it's hard to tell from the pics.

I agree that the price seems a tad high and I'd want to get it down to $8K even.
 
Average price for the mileage. Try to find one as far south as you can. Rust is the Achilles heel of these 4runners.

Even on some of the worst examples the most it is is surface rust, and corrorded bumpers, maybe a little more, nothing compared to some other cars.
 
Wow, that's crazy... I've been looking to upgrade mine too and I found one that looks identical to this one except with 147k, and was curious about what a fair price would be for it. KBB for the one w/147k was about $7.5k and excellent retail was $9k... NADA had it in about the same range.

I think this trim package/color is the best looking of all the 3rd gen options. For $8k I'd jump on it. That mileage is nothing to worry about.
 
I hate RUST!!... Its like cancer, almost impossible to get rid of and its only going to get worse. My 97 runner has always been in TN and with 189K is basically still rust free. My 1990 Cherokee that is now in semi retirement with 256K miles was always a TN vehicle and same story, unbelievably rust free. Frames still black, springs, shocks and hardware underneath basically rust free, lift up the hood and basically no rust on bolts and brackets, it makes a huge difference. I've bought several northeastern vehicles in the last 5-6 yrs that were much newer yet already eat up with it. I sold them, seems every time you go to work on them all of the bolts, brackets, etc are rusted and s@#t starts breaking off or just being a general pita... Learned my lesson, I will probably NEVER buy another from up there. Don't know where that runner is from or exactly how far up there you are and I think not every state up there uses excessive salt just not sure which ones that is... OK, thats my rust/salt rant for the day... Look it over for rust and of course mechanically and if all checks out ok...The pics look great.... price is not great but not to bad either and yet you might get it for closer to $8K too...

It's just like mine! minus the sun roof visor. I paid around 8k for mine with 109K miles. It has some minor paint issues on the front bumper and lip of the hood from all the chips from the highway. Looks like a good rig though and you gotta love that color with the flares! JUMP ON IT!

My 4runner has been perfectly mechanically except for issues related to rust. I would saw his profile says NC or Baltimore. I would buy in NC or south if you can. My 4runner has so far needed a new rear bumper, coolant lines for the rear heater, muffler rusted open, and my rear shocks broke off their top mounts all from rust. Spent around 1100 to fix all of that. If you can avoid it I would.
 
LIke others have said, the price seems a little high. I bought a 99 highlander in July that had 103k on it for $7k. I would try to get it down into the $7k range before I bought it.

Did all Highlanders come standard with the locker?

Now in regards to the mileage. My parents are going to be helping me out with the purchase of a 4WD vehicle as part of my graduation gift and my father is a little apprehensive about what he perceives to be high mileage for this 4Runner, at 126,xxx. I've attempted to explain the reliability of these trucks and how many members have kept theirs running well into 200,000 miles.

What are some arguments I can make in defense of the "high" mileage and convince him that this 4Runner will be a responsible purchase and there is nothing to worry about concerning the mileage. He hasn't been buying my line that "4Runners are just reliable, don't worry about it."

Not all highlander editions came with the e-locker. The most rare 4runners from what I hear is the highlander edition with the 5 speed manual transmission and the e-locker. However, it is very possible to throw in a rear diff lock if you don't already have one.

A few arguments you can bring up are that any toyota, especially 4runners retain a great value, so you can always sell it for a good price. The 4runner will do you well if you take care of her, things like the timing belt and regular maintenance. Also, the 3rd generation 4runner is still a great looking suv for its age. For a 10+ year old car, they still look modern and can out-run alot of other similar category suvs
 
It looks like it's in good shape. Obviously you want to negotiate him down to like $8,000. The miles on it are average and does not seem to have been driven to death.
 
Consumer Reports

Log onto consumer reports and check out the reliability rankings. Near perfect for all the 4runners in the last 10 years. Hard to beat that!
