While I was putting a set of spacers on to remedy a frame rub situation I noticed my driver's side front caliper was "dragging" Wasn't completely seized because only 2 of the 4 pistons in the caliper just weren't receding when the brakes weren't applied. I could not get more than a 1/4 turn of the wheel ( with my heavier E-rated KO2s) and really couldn't budge the hub with the wheel off. I have 199 tundra brakes which up until this, worked perfectly - or at least I thought. I order a Toyota Caliper kit and 4 new pistons and rebuilt the caliper and it works as it should now. It was a mother f&*^%r getting those 2 pistons out. Had to remount the caliper with one pad on the good side to hydraulically push out the stuck pistons on the other side.
At the same time, I found my passenger rear brakes dragging pretty good too. I found my bell crank on that side seized causing a mis- adjustment of the Ebrake. Also, not completely locking up put really putting a drag on the wheel. I replaced a lot of the bell crank components (Toyota) and adjusted them and the shoe to drum spacing per the FSM. Now they are also working as they should.
I immediately noticed a touch more power and after my first fill up after the repair I noticed I went about 45 more miles per tank (195 to 240 mi to the low fuel level light) which is almost 3 mpg increase.
This is the second time I had a partially seized caliper (had one on my 2000 4Runner too).
So check those brakes everyone; they are the most important system on our trucks and maybe you can save some cash at the pump too.
