Cherry bomb vortex muffler

Has anyone just done a swap from the stock muffler to one of the vortex mufflers like what Jason Burtman is selling on his website? I wanna get a nice throaty sound w/o going over the top and i'm only interested in a muffler, not a full cat-back.

Do you happen to remember how much you got it for and roughly how much they charged you to install it?

I havnt done too much research on muflers yet so i dont really know what to look for. I saw a couple of ppl talking about their flowmasters being like 20" or 22" in diameter, do i need to look for a certain size vortex muffler?

What do you have clemsonfan?
 
alright I bought my Vortex from JEGS.

it was $69.

2.25" center and 2.25" offset. the muffler shop will add pipe if needed, no worries.

I love it. :) Here's a 0-60mph video so you can hear it. its filmed with my Canon ELPH so the sound isnt super crisp but its good enough!

I got mine from Ebay and it was around $50 if I remember correctly. I paid $50 for the installation.

Flowmasters come in different lengths. I think the longer ones have aren't as loud.

Mufflers sound different depending on where you are. Like it will sound different if you are listening to it with the windows up, if they are down, and if you are hear it going down the road.
 
Ok, I took some video of my exhaust today, but I don't know how to upload it to Youtube or any of that stuff. Anybody want to help?
 
Sorry i've never uploaded anything on to youtube before but I think you can upload them on to photobucket if you wanna give that a try.

So the stock piping on my 97 SR5 is 2.25" in and out of the muffler correct? I'd hate to get the wrong size. lol

I think I got the 2.5", but 2.25" is the correct size I think.

I tried Photobucket, but it didn't work.

I'm going to try and make a video tomorrow and upload it.

If that doesn't work I will try and use my digital camera instead of my video camera.
 
So the consensus is that the appropriate size is 2.25" in and 2.25" out?

Looking at the Jegs website, that would be the first option under the center in, offset out?

That site is kinda confusing though because when you click on the picture for the center in/offset out 2.25" it gives you a picture that appears to be offset in/offset out. I imagine that's just a problem of linking the wrong picture, though.

The stock piping is a metric size but the closest that an exhaust shop can easily attach and weld from what I have read is 2.25".

Why not have the shop do a nice custom cat-back for 200-250 dollars?

I'm not really interested in dropping that much money. But what are the benefits of adding a custom cat-back system, maybe I can be swayed.

Another noob question- what kind of shop can install a muffler? I know there are specific muffler shops out there but would a place like Meineike or some place similar be able to hook it up?

Did you just go to a local shop? I don't know where any of the auto shops are around here because I'm away at college and not familiar with the area. I guess I'll just Google "auto shops" in my area and call around for a price quote.
 
I should say have a shop do a mandrel bend cat back for you.

The difference is that the stock and other cheap exhausts use crush bends on the tube which restricts flow by as much as 30% by the time you get to the end of the exhaust.

The mandrel bends like on the JBA I got from Gadget are bent with a tube inside so they are perfectly smooth. This allows WAY more flow. So your new muffler will be loud and you'll actually see real gains in performance. Better fuel mileage and 5 HP to go with it.

Auto Connection is a cheap muffler brake chain around here that does custom and installs aftermarket kits. I would just look through the phonebook, make a bunch of calls and see what local smaller place seems like they would do a good job for a reasonable price.
