I have lurked on this site for years but never posted.. I mainly post on Marlin Crawler for the past 10 years but since I am a new 3rd gen owner I figured this is the place to be

New to me 1999 4Runner... less than 24hrs ago I got a great deal on this runner and I am going to abandon my first gen project and move on up.

Has 148k on the clock

Current plans are to get an ARB bumper... probably a toytech lift... and install my ARB I have had sitting around. It currently has 4.10 gearing so I need to confirm that my runner actually has 4.10 gearing. I have read multiple threads on how to determine and it still seems sketchy..

Got it all registered and plated this weekend. Then went and got stereo work done. Alpine deck, all alpine replacement speakers and added a sub.

Then got the front windows tinted to match the rears. 20%

Then removed all the black door edging.

Going to be ordering parts this week.


Question: Is the Boss coil over kit better than the toytec kit? I know boss costs a little more but is it worth it?

Toytec kit uses shocks valved for other vehicles since they dont make them for our rigs really. The BOSS kits have been custom valved to give a good ride in our trucks. At least I think thats how it goes, not sure if its that much better of a ride.

I got my ARB bumper delivered and I was just looking at the box of parts and I had a couple questions.

From searching ARB installs it looks like people are cutting off the ends of the frames and some are cutting the flange around the end. Since I dont want to have to weld an end plate can I just cut the flange around the end of the frame and make it smooth to where this bracket slides over the end:

Then once this slides over the end, are you still able to use a bolt on the front face that would be similar to using the bolt with the provided frame extension that doesn't get used?

(this extension bracket is only for tacomas correct... )

Minor updates:

Rolled over 150k...

Changed parking lights to LEDs. I tried the cool white in first pic but ended up using the amber bulbs in second.

Added some PIAA white extreme headlight bulbs

Then bought some toyota goodies - Lower ball joints, upper ball joints, outer tie rod ends and stereo brackets.

Also got a BOSS lift with superflex rear. I am hoping to do the lift this weekend with the fresh front end parts.

Then I need to install my ARB front bumper and winch. Parts are stacking up.

How do you like the PIAA bulbs?

I haven't driven with them much in the dark but so far at dusk they work well. Nice clean light I bought them after reading the LED threads. They will work well tell something amazing comes out in LED that actually lasts

I checked that, seems that there is still so much contradictory info out there though that the best thing to do will be to count teeth when I pull out the rear third to swap it :/

Ordered my rims last night.. Should be here early next week. I am going to run my goodyear 265's for a while longer since they have really good tread then bump up to a larger size a little later. Unless it ends up looking goofy with the lift then I will expedite the change

Did some work on the 4runner this weekend with a buddy and a bunch of new parts

This is how it sat at the beginning:

Pretty much all wheel well measurements were about 35"

Did the front first. Let me start off by saying this whole job was so much easier with two people.. had it only been me it would have been a pain and lots of cussing! We installed the new factory toyota lower ball joints and tie rod ends. Just as a note by runner has 150k and the factory LBJ's looked super good when I pulled them off. Installed the BOSS coilovers at factory settings then ended up raising them up to just under 3" to sit level with the back.

Then moved onto the rear. We got one side in great then ended up having to use spring compressors for the other side. We may have been ok if we had unhooked the panhard bar but we didn't want to. All in all it went smooth though.. with two people that is.

And all done.

Yet still looking like a baby next to my buddys 2nd gen sitting on 37's.

When all done all wheel well measurements were consistent at 38" (3" lift)

After lift was on I decided the running boards need to come off right away!

Now I just need to get my wheels in!!!

Alignment is done.

Great build so far! Looks like you've done some good research already and made great decisions on your to-do list. Really looking forward to seeing how this progresses. I can't believe how clean it is!
