Last night did a quick DRL-sectomy

I got to go home early from work friday since my younger son busted his chin and had to get stitches so with the extra time I figured I would put my rear JDM spoiler on.

Saturday morning is alignment time and the first time I have driven it since front end work for 5 months!!!!

Then the turd dropped

It was driving great.. just going around town, keeping it easy.. when we noticed a nasty rubbing side on passenger front.. like metal rubbing so we turned around and went straight home.

When I got home I laid underneath front to see what was causing the problem. When I got under there I noticed this lovely leak

This is gear oil leaking out between long tube diff side and CV axle. Which totally sucks because I put brand new toyota seals on both sides of diff. So now I get to take this side back apart and see why it failed

So since it was too late to order seals I figured I would work on the ARB compressor so that I can hurry up and test the front locker in case that needs to be worked on too.

Got the compressor all setup and mounted and now I need to wire.

Needed to raise one end of compressor up so it sat flat on passenger fender area.. Just happened to have a set of these MSD ignition box stand offs that worked perfect.

Even just enough room to hook up the air hose attachment.

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my accident. Hard to believe time as gone by that fast! Still feel pain pretty much every day but happy to be here!

To this in a just a couple seconds....

Totally defeated and not sure if I was going to do it all again.. I did anyway.. and bought this...

and here we are a year later.. and happy I made the decision to stick with it!!! I hope after the second year I can say I have made even more cool and drastic changes

I am not sure what other changes you could possibly do to improve upon your build.

I really dig how you have modded your 4Runner. That rear Surf wind deflector really give it a distinct look. I still have to catch up on a long list of items I need to do to mine. I should have my 4X Innovations bumper heading my way within 3 weeks give or take.

My rig is at Toyota now getting the studs replaced. Discount Tire didn't sound too happy that I didn't use one of their mechanics on their list. But I am not happy about running around fixing their mistakes. So I don't really care what they think. LOL.

Do you have any plans for going forward, or are you just about done?

I am not sure what other changes you could possibly do to improve upon your build.

Did they strip some wheels studs? Cause they did on my front! Thankfully they popped out fairly easy!

Wire in rear back up LEDS and rear license plate lights
Trans cooler
Battery terminals and better grounds
Diff breathers
Install skid plates
Misc wiring
Install ditch lights

It never ends!! But I feel like I got most of the bigger things done so that's good!

Haha, that's a pretty nice list. I have a couple of log jams to address, and then I can make a bit of progress. I will tackle winch, PIAA fogs, ARB compressor, and Hella supertones once I get my hands on a Blue Sea box.

My wheels stick out a good bit with my 4" BS. I have no flares whatsoever. What backspace are your wheels?

This thing is beautiful man! On your diff leak, how far did you put the seal in? There is no stop for the seal on the passenger side so it'll keep going. The driver side has a stop so you drive the seal until it hits the stop. You may have put the passenger side seal too far in and that's why it's leaking if it isn't making contact. Just a thought. I tried to make the seal flush with the tiny lip in the housing. I checked my factory housing that I pulled out and it was that way too.. So Im not sure what happened but I have a weird split in my seal as seen on next post.

So I took the passenger side back apart to try and fix the problem.

Here is a pic of seal before pulling:

Then I pried it off and saw this break and I'm really not sure if I did this while prying or if it was there... (you can see my pry mark towards top of seal)

So I am going to go to Home Depot and try and find a pipe the correct diameter to install the new seal so I don't have to tap with flat punch this time. (Even though I was super careful the first time).

Pipe method is how I do all my seals since it seems the least harmful to the seal. Hopefully the second time works out for you.

Yeah I wasn't paying attention, I thought you were doing a real axle seal. So ignore me...freezer method is tried and true though

Here is my seal install tool I made from 2" pipe parts from home depot.

So now seal is in and its all put together and drove it around town yesterday and its holding! No leaks so far.. I want to put some more in town miles in first before I drive it to work again.

Little side note about my rear bumper carrier handle latch. Last time I drove my runner it had rained hard and then it sat in my garage without having the rear hatch opened for 5 months. So when I went to open the rear it was jammed with rust I broke the handle trying to get it free then actually got smart and used a punch on the end. Anyway, got a new handle and you can see the rust that developed inside the tube. This time I put some grease and anti-seize in there for protection. Just something to think about.
