Chim's 99

Interesting, I guess I never paid attention if I had that cover on my 99.. but its in good shape and everything its protecting is super clean so I will just trim it as needed and put it back up :)

Did a small job of changing my battery terminals yesterday. Just a little project to knock off the list. Next weekend is a big one though.. TRANSMISSION! Going to finally replace my whining transmission so I can have some confidence in driving more than around town! I was going to do a manual swap but as I was driving around I was mocking using a clutch and it just wasn't comfortable for my size so I decided to keep it auto. So today I am ordering my Toyota Reman trans from my local Toyota dealership and it should only take a few days to get here so it will be ready for the weekend. I want to hurry and swap it since they are charging me a $1000 core! I will post more of that later :)

For now here is a video on my youtube channel I did of my terminals.

Picked up this beauty last night. Going to swap it in this weekend and hopefully everything goes smooth!

I'm a subscriber on your youtube channel. Your video with the military terminals convinced me to do it on my own rig. Congrats on winning the lotto :)

what's your plan with the old trans you are replacing?

Awesome, I appreciate the support! Making the videos is fun for me and motivates me to actually get some work done :) I thought with my $38.70 lottery win I was lucky but my next ticket was a dud.. oh well!

The old trans will be packaged up the same way I got this new one and sent back to Toyota cause there is a $1000 core charge!

It was a weekend full of wrenching!

Here are a couple videos so far to sum up what was done:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZWQbNYu3Ms

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwJ4-HSB6CI

Friday night started unhooking things after work in prep for the transmission install. Worked a few hours then called it quits and edited a video.

Late Saturday morning hit it again.. lots of chatting, hanging out and wrenching. Then yesterday worked a couple more hours on it. I would say total time spent so far is about 10-12hrs.. not trying to rush.

Old and new side by side:

Got the radiator out last night. Im putting a new one in as preventative maintenance cause I don't want to run a trans cooler even though I have one. Should be fine without it.

So now I am just waiting for radiator to get here this evening so I can put that in and then attached the trans cooling lines and button everything else back up. Then all that will be left is to top of fluids and test!

For some reason every time I see you post I get anxious. haha. Probably because you have some of the coolest t4r mods and I get jealous when I see them. Transmission looks real good man, did you ever figure out what that extra hump was on it?

haha thanks! Don't get anxious over this one.. its was spendy and I would have rather not had to do it! Once its in I'm going to be driving around paranoid till I know its all good :/

I don't know what that extra hump is.. looks like a provision for a forward shift case? It didn't sit any higher than the shift mount on t-case side so I'm not going to worry about. We will see if it matters at all when I go to shift it!

I know that feeling of driving around all paranoid, I feel that way about my lift right now. Sketched out about if I did it right and every noise makes me jump. hahaha

Got my transmission finished!!

Just to note.. this could be a one weekend job.. I slacked off and let it spread to two because I was feeling lazy.. but no more transmission whine! Now to watch for leaks and if its all good then I can finally have confidence to do some fun stuff now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGyf6e4o8qQ

Nice work with the transmission swap! That looks like a job for sure. You should be in a good position to get out and enjoy it. This Winter's got to stop sometime. This isn't Game of Thrones.

This might be a stupid question, but is the new one the same as the old? Common Sense tells me yes, and I didn't see any post saying you're doing anything crazy.... But in the pic, it seems overall larger (fatter). Is it just the angle of the pic?

its the same, nothing crazy. Its a Toyota reman so all internals are supposed to be new and not just replaced wearable items. I think its the dirt and shadows making it look different. There is a difference though near the vent shifter area. Old one was pretty flat and the new one has a raised section there looking like a forward shift trans. I was a little concerned but everything works great like it should :)

Sure got a purdy transmission.Looks real good, I want to do this somewhat soon but don't have the patience for it I think.

Is yours making noise? Its not a fun job but one weekend is a good trade off for years and years of more driving!

Thanks for the info. Was also asking because someone was parting out a 2000 4Runner (He bought it for the 3.4 to put into a pickup) and the Auto transmission in it was a OEM rebuilt (From Toyota) and it only had about 400 miles on it. I don't need it, but I could get it for about couple hundred... Can't pass it up just in case. I hear 2000 and '99 is the same. From the little searching I did, I was getting about 50/50 response on if they were interchangeable or not.
