Not always, only if they observe the Lunar Calendar. Vietnamese New Year is Tet, it falls on the same day as Chinese New Year's with the exception of some years. Japanese New Year is on January 1st based on the Gregorian Calendar.

Tagalog for 'Happy New Year' with so many Chinese dialects, not sure about 'Gung Hay Fat Choy, my Catonese friends shorten it to Gung Hay.

It is not belated, they actually celebrate their new year in February. Each year is designated with a different animal, such as year of the tiger, year of the dragon, year of the chicken, etc.... They also give money as gifts to wish a prosperous new year. As far as what ethnicity Thai is and if he celebrates the chinese new year, not sure, ...., but its the thought that counts right?

good dictionary Mike. hehe. American born, my Father spoke Tagolog. wife's family speaks Illocano. Growing up along the California coast, we hear everything.

Definately not belated. It's not always in February, Lunar New Year can fall between late January to late February. Depending on region, the New Year festivities usually lasts for a week to a little over two depending on region.

The 12 animals in the Chinese Lunar Calendar are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Mike, it is fun. I talk to east coast and deep south, takes me forever to bend my ear to their spech patterns. Defferent dialects are fun the world over.

Not really, it's similar to the astrological signs. It's sort of a predictor of your personality and compatibility match with another person (of a different animal).
