Chirping noise

I have a 2002 4-runner sport that makes a chirping noise in certain circumstances. The noise is intermitent and tends to occur at slower speeds when I am slowing down for a light/stop sign, etc. The noise itself sounds like a very very short horn blast or a short version of the noise that you hear when you use your keyless entry thing.

The maintenance guys at my local dealer have no idea what this thing is although it seems to me that their is a short somewhere.

Has anybody else dealt with this or have any ideas.

Chirp Noise

It's the rear seat (Passenger side) latch. I used parafin wax scraped on the latch and it worked. You could use some thick lubricant. dick 13

hello again. i'm not sure i understand. there is something on the latch that needs to be fixed to stop the chirping?

Lubricate the latch on the passenger side rear seat.

The latch on the top of the seat used to put it down?

Yes, the latch that holds and locks the seat. There is a claw like latch on the seat and a rectangular piece attached to the body.

I've lubricated every latch in the whole car and the chirping still happens. Any ideas?

maybe it's ashton kutcher... perhaps he installed a small device and when you slow down , he pushes the button... so that you think it only happens when you slow down! haha

you should laugh and just next time it happens, okay dude, so i've been punked... the game is over now...

I do laugh every time it happens because it is pretty funny. I really can't figure out what it is.

It is coming from the horn. It is as if I'm pressing on the horn ever so gently. In the city it is a bit of a problem because people could be crossing in front of me and they'll think I'm honking at them.

Sometimes it just happens when the car is idling and not moving. I've tried to time the intervals but I can't. To be honest I think it is driving me mad.

Here's the one thought I have and then I'll shut up and take it to another mechanic, but I think my brakes might be funny. I've come to a skid when slowing down quickly a couple of times and I didn't feel the ABS system the way I thought I would. In my two previous cars (Mazda and Jeep) when I thought the car might skid and I was jamming on the breaks I felt the pedal automatically pump rapidly to bring the car to a halt. I have never felt that on my 4Runner so I'm wondering if..... the little horn chirp I'm hearing is somehow related to, or designed to, tell me that my ABS system is failing.

Hey I have an 01 4wd SR5 and mine was making a chirping noise as well. This is what I did. First, i rolled down all of my windows while I was driving at a slow speed. It was then that I realized that the noise was coming from the outside of the car. I rolled up the rear two windows and then noticed it was coming from the front. What I did next was weird, but I was able to pinpoint what was causing the chirping sound. I took both of my hands and layed them on the front of the hood, right above the grill. i then began to "rub" the hood side to side. Low and behold--CHIRPING! I open the hood and greased the hood latch (that little sucker that holds the hood down). No more chirping. Problem solved. This was true in my case. You may want to give it a try.
