Christmas lights/rear power outlet

So I strung some Christmas lights around my Camelback roof rack and was all excited until I put the car in drive and the rear outlet turned off. Is there a way around this issue?

The 120v outlets are limited to 100 watts when in gear. 400 watts in park or neutral. Leds solve this.

thanks for the info, my 2016 4 runner had no problem with the christmas lites, but the led swap is a good idea.

I use two strands of LEDs and have been since I bought my 4Runner. No issues and all I have to do is make sure my wife doesn't add more strands than the watt can handle

I bought basically the same lights from Loews.

I have two strands and haven't had any issues. Love having the on/off switch already stock. They're pretty bright at night too.

I did LED out the sunroof last year.

I found out the plastic covering on the lights could scratch the paint, so I put a piece of cardboard near where I was working.

It was sort of a PITA I would knock into the cord. It went from the rear center of the sunroof down to the console.

Curious how you run power out the back. I was worried I would pinch the cord. If the window is even the bit cracked the rear defogger wont go on.

As others have stated, buy a string of solar powered LED lights! Once you charge it up, string it wherever desired, the sun will re-charge and as the sky darkens, voila...Christmas Lights!

For example, I shot this 5:45am (45 minutes before morning twilight). This was shot at Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Nearest power outlet would be my 4Runner about 300 yards away (at best).

Nope .. ran out in between the weather stripping (be careful opening and closing the rear door because of it though) and up and out in between the backdoor and the exterior body. There is a little gap in between the door and the car to allow it to float in between and out.

Gotta agree, ran xmas lights for two years w/out issues on my 4th gen. Jealous of the outlet in the back, I'm stuck running a noisy inverter

Reviving an ancient one here.

How did you guys route the cord through the hatch to the roof rack? Any issues with the plug on the roof? I was figuring on wrapping the cord plug between the extension and strand in a ziploc and tape.
