Chrome to BlacK?

I'm thinking about going from chrome to black with my nerfbars, bull bar and tail light guards.... maybe even the grill?? My question is would painting them with Rino Liner look stupid? Thats the only way I can think of going black with a durable flat black finnish.... paint will scratch and chip fast! I know buckets of Rino liner are avail real cheap....

Hey...I got mines already..and going to work on the installation this weekend..may paint them this weekend also (they are stainless steel). Got some instructions from a friend on how to do it. I know this reply does not answer your question. But if mines comes up nice enough. I will share the process with you and the rest of the forum in general

I'm in the EXACT same situation as you danny4runer. ss nerfbars, chrome westin bbar and chrome grill. The bullbar is sold and leaving my car soon and I'm stuck on where to go from here.

I'm just not a fan of the painted grill and with our cars being Titanium I fell like chrome may be a better accent than black. I'm trading blacked out wheels with a forum member but I'm not sure where to go from there.

if you do the rhino liner,its most important to make sure you prep everything correctly. also, RL has a tendency to run, so it would be better to do one section of a part at a time & use thin, even coats. personally, id go with a spray on bed liner. it would be alot easier, or even high heat paint,what ever u do, scuff up first, use gloves so no oil gets on them, clean with rubbing alcohol to get any off, use a paint adhesive (bulldog,etc.) to help hold the primer or paint/liner better. sometimes , things have a hard time sticking to chrome. take ur time, & theres no reason it shouldnt look good!

Powdercoat everything that is metal, tons more durable than any paint and it looks good too. As far as your grill goes if you want to change the finish on that do a color matched limited grill. The grill takes a tremendous amount of abuse and I would prefer to have the durability of an OEM finish.

basically, what he said ^^.

it's not hard to do, but with the round bars, etc... it'll be hard to roll on the liner. if you WANT that crinkly finish, then you'll need to roll it on with a loop roller.

if you don't care, then a can of the spray on stuff (or spray it on yourself, if you have the equipment) would probably yeild a smoother, more even coat.

prep is EVERYTHING if you don't want it to peel/chip later. mask off everything you don't want to get liner on, because it is HARD to clean when it dries.

oh, and read the MSDS well before you start. if that stuff gets on your skin, it's not coming off... and the fumes ain't good for you either.

i used a respirator, disposable paint suit, etc... when i lined my wife's bumpers, grill, and rockers (spray and roll). sweated like a pig, but cleanup was real easy - strip off suit and discard.

Color Changes?

I've got a 4th gen shadow mica SR5 (dark grey) and I'm not very happy with how the chrome looks (mostly grill). Rear hatch inset and doorhandles are also chrome now (stock). First, how easy would it be to paint (or have painted) the grill to match the factory color (1F4)? I've heard horror stories about chrome film peeling off the plastic part during prep or later. I'm mostly concerned about the grill, but don't want the whole truck to look bad with chrome in some places and not others. Also, how easy would it be to powdercoat these parts? Basically, I'm thinking of getting a black bull bar, and not sure if it will clash with dark grey body and chrome grill. Another option would be to flat black the grill only? I have an extra grill (chrome) that I can experiment with. Maybe somebody has tried one of these things? Thoughts?

I am having a custom built replacement bumper made out of DOM tubing, and plan to paint it with black Duplicolor Bed liner that comes in the aerosol cans. It gives it a semi-gloss textured finish, but not too textured. If you scratch it up, just lightly sand over it and spray over the spot. If you are painting a previously chrome finished product, then as was said, prep is very important - sand, prime, clean with acetone or thinner, then paint.

I also have a Shadow Mica SR5, and I have a chrome allergy too so I bit the bullet and bought replacement parts for the grill, rear hatch garnish and door handles - all in black - and swapped out the chrome. If you want to blacken the Toyota insignias, you"ll have to remove them and paint them yourself. The front pops out easily, but the rear requires some solvent and elbow grease to remove the gooey glue residue. Rough up the chrome coated plastic, prime and paint black. Use 3M door molding adhesive tape to replace it (apply to back of insignia, trim carefully with x-acto knife, peel and stick).

I'm really happy with the replacement black parts, and if you don't mind spending the cash, I'd say go that route. IMHO, I think that approach will look better than painting them.
