My 2003 4runner was putting out warm a/c. Took it to the dealer who said I had a leak in the condenser. They put in a new condenser which lasted for 4 weeks when a/c was putting out warm air again. Dealer said there was a leak in the newly installed condenser and ordered a new one. Never did get my old condenser back (hmmm).
Meanwhile, while waiting a week for the new condenser, my check engine light, vsc trac and vsc off lights all came on. I had just filled up the fuel tank a day prior. A few days later the new condenser was in and I took the car back to the dealer to get it installed. Showed the dealer the CEL and VSC lights and asked them to check it out. They put the new condenser in and told me they turned off the CEL and that the diagnostic code came back catalytic converter. VSC trac and VSC off lights were still on when I drove the car off the lot. Dealer told me to drive it a while and observe. Told me a cat converter would cost $1600. Having just spent 2K for the condenser and brakes and other "suggested" work, I said there's no way I can do another $1600. He then said there were "other options".
A week later, the VSC lights are still on. NOTE: the lights only come on once you put the car in motion. Car runs fine, no sputtering, stalling, nothing. Smooth ride. So I asked the dealer to tell me exactly what code(s) came up when they did the diagnostics on the CEL and VSC lights which he claims came up cat converter. I left 2 messages a few days ago asking for this info, and all of a sudden I'm not getting a return call (hmmm).
Any ideas as to how I can find out what is REALLY causing these lights to stay on and how to get this fixed? Maybe it is the cat converter, but I'm not ready to put out another $1600 just yet -- and, how coincidental -- I just passed the 80,000 mile mark, so no warranty now. Thanks!
