Clanging sound on slow, sharp turns

When I make a slow sharp turn (when pulling into a parking space) I occasionally hear a clanging sound from the front end.

I've got 144K miles. Its a 4x4 SR5.

Any ideas what this may be?

No. Just when I'm slowly making a sharp turn into a parking space. Also, it only happens when turning left. The sound is a cross between a "clang" and a "pop".

I feel like it might be a bushing or ball joint in the front suspension. Would that make sense?
 
You don't say what year you have but I am guessing that 3rd gens are the same....sounds like it might be CV joint noise. Usually the outer ones go first - check to see if your boots are split and grease is slung all over your wheel well. If you find this then it is probably time to swap out the half shaft assembly(s) with rebuilt.
 
Its a '97. I was looking at it last night and the boots looked good. Didn't see any grease.

The dealer said its the steering rack. The tech that looked at it said the left shaft coming out of the rack in moving up and down when the wheels turn. I looked for this last night and couldn't see what he was talking about. Its about $900 ($500 parts, $400 labor) to get it fixed. I want to makes sure this is really the problem before I go ahead.

Does anyone know where I can download a schematic of the steering rack?
 
I second the CV joint. Support the runner on jack stands with the tires off the ground. Turn the wheels to full lock and then spin the tires by hand and see if you can duplicate the sound or see any excess play in the CVs.
 
While you have it up on jack stands, with the steering wheel LOCKED, try to move the tires back and forth by hand while watching the tie rod ends and look for play.
 
I have recently started to have the same thing happen, but mind is coming from the rear end and it happens the worst when I am braking. I have no idea what mine is. I did recently have the rear diff replaced though.

That's another possibility that I was reading about on another forum today.

There's caps on the steering stops that wear out and simply fall off, which will cause a clanking sound when the wheels are turned.
 
Sorry, I was thinking 2nd gen. I believe you are correct. No stops. Just checked the TSRM and don`t see any listed. I couldn`t be for sure unless I went out and looked @ mine, but it`s pouring rain right now.
 
Well, just got back from the dealer. Took two hours to figure out what mine was coming from. At first, we thought strut housing or maybe the strut itself. But that was not it.

My rear bumper is dented, like alot of 4runners. It seems the bottom of my rear bumper is smacking the top of my trailer hitch. We just bent that little section of my rear bumper up a few millimeters and....POOF...cclanking noise is all gone.
 
I just got back from the dealer too. The tech pulled back the left boot on the inner tie rod end while somebody turned the wheel back and forth. The inner tied rod end would pop up when turning the wheel left.

So now I know where the sound is coming from inside the rack. Only problem is that I don't know if its something inside the rack or just where the inner tie rod end mates to the actual rack.

Anyone ever replace the inner tie rod end? How about the entire rack?
