Clank / metallic rattle suspension noise???

Hey guys,

Apologies in advance for being somewhat vague...

I am hoping someone might have experienced this in the past, and through my feeble attempt at describing the noise - be able to identify the noise / issue.

Every time I drive over a pot hole etc there is a subtle clanking / metallic rattle that originates from the wheel area.

The noise does not seem to be there if I drive over a hump - in other words i only hear it once the wheel travels down into hole and rebounds. The upward motion and then downward rebound when going over a speed hump, does not create the noise.

No issues with alignment, balancing. No knocking if i turn the wheels etc...just straight line clank / rattle.

I am sure i will have to have it looked at..and i am certain your responses will point out to many possibilities....just wondering if anyone could direct me to the source...

Can you isolate the noise to a particular wheel? (Does it occur when the front end hits, or the rear? Different if you hit a pothole on the left vs. right side?)

Check the bushings and ball joints; you'll want to use a pry bar to really wiggle them around (the forces involved in driving are much higher than what you can reproduce by hand).

Other possibility: check the heat shielding on top of the exhaust system. I've heard of more than one that rusted off its mounts and started rattling (pretty sure my truck is doing that right now).

In my experience, noises like that that only occur when one wheel moves more than the other are usually caused by the sway bar ends or sway bar bushings. You can test it by removing your sway bar completely and driving it around that way for a few days to see if the noise goes away.

Check the nut on top of the strut.

My front end noise was sway bar bushings attaching it to the chassis. I could see the space between the bar and rubber. Doubtful you'll get a reply from the folks earlier in this thread seeing it's 4 years old.
