Greetings all,

Just bought my first Runner 1998 5spd 3.4L came from TDi's and 1.8t's...

I friggin love this thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not be happier...oh wait.. dont have the diff lock....so that would make me happier..lol

Did the search thing and was wondering...

Does anybody use a class 4 oil in the 3.4s?

I read alot about the debate on Synth vs dino...

But its all class 3 products that are all dino vs dino .. (mobil...castrol "full synth"....and such which are really only dino cracked "re engineered" synth which is by law not allowed to be called synth in most counties but the US and Canada of course).

I see now why there is a debate over synth and dino... as everybody is using dino based oils...lol

Any one use a lubromoily, elf, royal purple, motul, or even amsoil? and what weight would you recommend for the runner.

I have 250,000 kilometers on it...

Thanks!!!

Welcome!

Oh VW guy, so its a MKIV Jetta or Golf or Passat, (don't say beetle)?
My Dad's got a 99.5 TDI Jetta RocketChip Stage 3 PP520's, Sachs VR6 G60 Clutch + Flywheel, GTI interior, 254k miles...

I also have 3rd Gen 4runner 5 speed, i do most of the work on the jetta and 4runner.

I use Rotella non synthetic 10w-30 in the 4runner year round in the NY/CT which is all 4 seasons.

Guilty...lol

I was a VW/audi guy... I know lots about vw/audi and sweet FA about toyota.

I too had the TDI tech nine tune with pp520's and vr6g60 clutch... your avatar looks familiar are you on the Freds TDI forum?

I moved on to the 1.8t wolfsburg.....it was faster than the tdi but the gas turbo system was a let down... the VNT system is far better and that's why the new twin turbo Porsches run them!

I am impressed with build quality the truck...which is saying alot from a german car guy...lol

I tested out xterra's cause they looked cool... but i cringed every time i got in one ..........the build quality looked like it came from fisher price... couldn't bring myself to buy one.

I not even sure how much the dealer oil change is...let alone what to put in it.

I've been reading that some of these poor guys have been using mobile one and going 8k miles on it!!! yikes!!! Those dino protein strands will not last that long!!! They need to look at ester based and other man made based oils for that.

Very few 3rd gen 4runner owners use expensive "real" synthetic oil. I used Motul 8100 X-cess in my MKV GTI, but that was the only car I ever bought boutique oil for.

You'll find that the 5VZ-FE really likes cheap dino oil, with 3-4K changes. Or the "fake" synthetic like Penz Plat, Valvoline Synpower, Mobil1, QS Q, etc....with 5-6K oci's.

Remember that the 5VZ-FE was designed in the early 90's. :)

I am on TDIclub but im not the guy you think i am, i saw the pic from his sig and decided it would be a good avatar here :D, I am 1tdi there (my dad created the account, i use it fairly often now too), The nicest things about the 4runner i like compared to a MKIV is the headliner and oil pan (atleast compared to the tdi), the jetta's headliner is sagging, the 4runner's looks new and very tight. Some of the people on here feel that VW quality leaves much to be desired, but I disagree. Your right about the VNT system, we have the original VNT-15 on the jetta and it has had RC3 + PP520's for 180k miles out of its 250k+ mile lifetime, and it is still very strong.

Anything 5w-30 or 10w-30 will be fine for it, whether you want synthetic or not is up to you, Just no 5w-40 ;)

You normally cant compare Japanese products to German at all... The build quality is not normally even in the same ballpark...Mind you the reliably....hands down toyota (unless were talking tdi.. then no contest....lol...)

I still think you could make the body of an xterra out of the amount of galvanized steel on the driver side door alone on my make 4.... (thats gonna cuase a stir...lol)

That being said I really love this toyota, I am really impressed with it. I think it actually handles the corners as good as my 1.8t with sport suspension.. which is awsome... the frame is solid.. the 8 inch 4:10 gears.. optional locker... lovin it!! I was expecting much less from japan. Happily surprised.

Makes you wonder why buy a jeep... anywho...

Sounds Like I'll use the class 2 stuff reg oil..

I take it Castrol gtx is fine.....I know penzoil is borderline class 1 and junky... Valvoline is probably good too

Class 1 - Reused low quality (Crappy tire Nugold aka turkey grease)
Class 2 - New conventional oil
Class 3 - hydroracked re engineered conventional oil mix of PAO & COnventional bases
Class 4 - Man made base (PAO ....ester stuff)detergents added.
Class 5 PAO bases and no detergents...racing only..not good for everyday use.

I use Royal Purple. I wont start with the "Its the best thing since sliced bread" because honestly, I started usuing it on the advice of a friend, and I havent seen anything bad from it. Is it really worth the rediculous price? Hell, I dunno, but it makes me feel like I am doing something semi-proactive to help protect my engine, ya know?

I still agree that what your engine was designed for is still the best thing to use... I would just like some added protection against sludging...( class 2 or 3 wont help in this area.... i know that much.

I will stick with the dino stuff untill i find what will be my best option...

I screwed up my tdi by putting in Redline tranny Race Oil in my 5 spd tranny..... BIg mistake.... technically a better oil... but it was not the proper weight or something and my shifter got locked up constantly... the factory synth stuff was better in the end.

Now I just have to find out what rims I can order that I can fit those 231 mm tundra calipers on...My rotors are pulsing like mad.... I hear they are very thin and prone to overheating...
