Cleaning Air Filters from K&N for 2008 4Runner

I have a 2008 4Runner. it's up to 60,000 and it's time to do some maintenance. I replaced the engine and cabin air filters at 30,000 with ones from K&N.

My engine air filter is looking a bit dirty and I'd like to clean it. I've never cleaned an engine air filter before. It says on the K&N website that all of their air filters are washable. Info here: K&N Air Filter Facts You Should Know

My question is this. How important is it to use the K&N Recharger Kit for cleaning their air filters? Info here: http://www.autoanything.com/air-filters/69A1993A0A0.aspx

I'm guessing dish soap detergent might damage the material? It says you have to oil the filter on the K&N website. I know nothing about air filters or cleaning them but would like to learn as it seems easy enough. Can someone give the quick run down?

I've been using the K&N air filter on my '08 since '09. Not a big deal, just use the cleaning kit every 4-months.
The kit comes with spray cleaner, let dry, then use the oil spray from the kit. All done.

Thanks Burt. I'll go ahead and pick up some cleaner from our local Auto Parts store.

You just don't want to put too much oil on it. I do a light coating on the filter.
