Cleaning my Motor

Hey....I am about to do a major tune up....based on many items from you guys..plugs, wires, ISR Mod, clean and buff the TB and MAF, fuel filter, and whatever else I can find. My question is....can I clean the engine and compartment before with a little degreaser( the motor is a bit nasty) and water?? or does anybody have any other suggestions?? Thanks!!!

Those coin operated power sprayer car washes have an engine degreaser setting. I'd use that. Use the power rinse after it works for a few minutes.

after you degrease your engine and pressure wash it/rinse it, use foamy tire shine/spray and it will look like a whole new motor -its what a lot of car dealers do to make the car look new and "well kept" or "maintained"... looks quite good actually.

Detail shops and all stealerships clean the engine bay all of the time. You the coin operatedlike above said then the foam a tire stuff. Like the The kid said. I do this all of the time. If you have a cold air intake make sure you cover the filter. The engine bay will look all nice and stuff

i bought a can of engine degunker and just went to town with 2 bottles . one on everything i could see under the hood..and the other..i got under the car, took off skid and went to town the 2nd time . let soak for 15 mins and sprayed off. it does look alot better now. i even did this on my rear axle and it looks awesome..really clean.

car wash places sometimes have engine cleaner also and i've used it a couple times..but nothing better than the can for me

I work for a dealer, so I get to do a LOT of detailing of my Yotas

First off, I'll let the engine cool and cover up the coil packs sitting on top of the spark plugs. If you get these too wet, you car will idle like chit.

Once I've covered those up (usually rubber bands with grocery bags should work) I'll spray the engine down with this

Then I'll let that sit for 15 minutes.

Then I take the pressure washer, and rinse. NEVER get closer than 12" to the ignition system, wires, coilpacks etc. Once that's done, take a towel and mop up the rest of the little pools of water. Oila! Clean engine bay.

Also if you have an air compressor, use that to get all the little puddles out of the nooks of the engine bay....

Or just drive really fast...


And cool i gotta try this chit on the 4runner, and the jetta too they have a heavy coat of over a decade of work.

Newb question... just as long as you cover the coil packs, you can hose down/pressure wash the entire engine?

All this time I've just been spraying engine degreaser and methodically wiping with a rag :thanks:

Get some plastic bags, and some rubber bands. wrap the coil packs with the plastic bags, and band them into place. Then carefully pressure wash the area. When you're close, just increase the distance. Then once that's all sprayed off, remove, and methodically wipe the area around the coil packs. Blast the excess water off with an air hose.

Sorry for the bad picture, but this is what muddskippers looks like after I pressure washed it. I neglected to do the bag treatment (I couldn't find rubber bands, and yes, I was in a hurry) It misfired for about 4 miles, CEL came on, then after that, the misfire went away and I reset the CEL. Never had a problem since.

Great info....I have since cleaned my compartment with Gunk, using the plastic bag method, and it looks great....Now I am ready to do my tune up/etc...just need the sun to shine....
