Clear up this speaker dilemna for me!

I've got the stock 6-spkr non-JBL in my '05 SR5.
I've bought a T1806 Scion headunit.
I've searched my ass off for a week now.
I still don't know what speakers to buy.

I've heard several brands mentioned frequently, with Infinity/MBQaurtz/Boston/Polk being the most often. I'd like to keep whatever I end up with under $200 total for speakers. I'll be buying some eBay adapters to fit everything.

I understand the sonic differences between 6x9's and 6.5's. I'll sacrifice a little bass and go with 6.5's up front if needed... but Infinity makes a decent looking 6x9" component.

I was also considering mounting 3.5"s in the factory tweeter location up top (I understand the work involved... not a problem), with some 6.5"s below and 6.5"s in the back.

Any of the brands I mentioned above have models that will fit the bill for price... just a pair of 6.5" components up front and a 6.5" 2-way rear would be easiest and get me out the door for less money. I just want to make sure I haven't overlooked anything.

The majority consensus around here seems to be that Infinity is the way to go, but there are many options in my pricereange... thoughts?

I'm interested in seeing the responses on this too -- I have an '08 with the non-JBL stereo, with a Scion T1808. I haven't changed out the speakers.

I've been considering changing the head unit and the speakers, but am curious whether the Scion HU has enough power to adequately drive some aftermarket speakers.

I'd like to keep the speakers mounted in the stock position, preferably hidden behind the stock grilles.
 
From what I've read, the eBay adapters or possiblt the ones from Tacotunes will let you run any aftermarket 6.5" or 6x9" in the front and 6.5" in the rear, and just about any 1" tweeter high in the front doors. I've sent 2 emails to Tacotunes now with no response... so I can't verify that anything they sell will fit the 4Runner.

Some people say the Infinity Kappas are "power hungry", but they have generally above average sensitivity when compared to MB's or JL's for example. I think the Infinity Reference are advertised to be better for OEM radio's and regular power aftermarket headunits (ie, un-amplified), but have lower sensitivities than most of the Kappas.

In any case, I think I'm going to end up with 6.5's in the doors and a 3.5" in the tweeter location. It's a nice little afternoon project along with installing the T1806. I'm waiting for my iPod cable to arrive, so maybe it'll get done later this week.

^Those are $200 a pair. I need at least 2 pairs... $200 is my OTD price for everything.

The speakers I'm looking at are like $50-$70 a pair for the Infinity coaxials, and maybe $100 for the front's if I end up with separates. I can still get 3 sets for under $200 if I go with the 3.5"s in the upper door.

Curious: why the 3.5" speakers in the tweeter location, vs. dedicated tweeters?

I did a quick search on ebay -- the brackets aren't that expensive (but add shipping to these):

^^^ For a set of 2 front door tweeter brackets, 2 front door 6.5" brackets, and 2 rear door 6.5" brackets, my total with shipping came to $60.

I'm wondering whether it'd be better in the end to simply buy the speakers from Crutchfield, and they'll include all the brackets plus speaker wire harness adapters.

Ohh I see sorry...There may be something decent out there that I don't know about for 100 bucks. I would just stick with stock if I was going to only spend that much though. Those ID speakers are sweet though for only 190.
 
Searching on the internet is the worst way to go about choosing speakers. It's not entirely about specifications.

Go visit audio shops and listen to them in person. Speakers are a very subjective thing.

Nothing you listen to in a store will sound the same mounted in your vehicle connected to your headunit. Auditioning in a store tells you nothing. In the end, you have to take the collective word of other people who have gone down the road before you and buy. Without the ability to listen to a dozen different setups in 4Runners with a Scion headunit, I'll buy blind and that's the best I can do. I have no brand loyalty and am not an audiophile by any means. Infinity is mentioned a lot around here, so that's where I'm headed.

Also when it comes to the local shops, I've found the prices seem to be subjective to the whim of the salesperson and what mood he's in or whether he likes your haircut. When I say, "I'd like to spend no more than $100 a pair"... I get "$100 shit, man you can't get quality for that, here look at these $300 ones on sale." Going into shops has been just as bad as all those horrible reviews linked above to the DealerCost website.

In the end, I just might go with Crutchfield for the peace of mind and no bullshit. And for simplicity and just to be done with this, I'm going with 6.5" separates in the front and 6.5" coaxials in the rear.

Amen..do what makes you happy man...just make sure you get a good deal on those speakers. i'd check out woofersetc too, but crutchfield is good for customer service.
 
No it won't sound exactly the same. But you'll get an idea of the sound signature of said speaker in that environment and chances are if you liked it in the store you'll still like it in your vehicle. That = something.

Do it however you want, but at least if you went to the store you're buying based off your ears, not the ears of someone on the internet who may or may not have the same vehicle, may or may not clean their ears, etc etc etc. That's all I'm saying, and I'm saying that from quite a few years of audio experience.

Also I never said you had to buy them from a local shop, just saying a local shop gives you the opportunity to hear them, then you have the choice to buy them there or shop around.
