Clicking noise when activating 4wd

Hi guys new to the forum. I was hoping for some insight on a clicking/ clunking noise coming from the rear of a 1999 limited 4runner. This happend when using the 4wd button on the fly and parked. It’s about as loud as saying the word click out loud talking normally. That’s the best way to describe how loud it is there is about a 10 to 15 sec delay for the 4wd to come on and make the noise. The delay isn’t always that long. Any help would be appreciated
