clicking noise...

While driving down the freeway, a clicking noise started, like a card in the spokes of a bicycle, under the chassis somewhere. At first I thought it was a flat tire, maybe a big nail or something. I stopped, looked under and all around.... nothing. Started up, slowly, then just went on, no noise. Any ideas?

I had a similar experience from the hub caps on a Maxima I once owned; I went to the dealer and he removed the hub caps and the sound was gone. You probably don't have hub caps on your 4Runner but I thought I'd throw that out there. Good luck, I know how iritating unrecoginizable sounds can be.

The noise happened while driving straight ahead at freeway speed. Maybe I was speeding up just a little bit, and it continued while I slowed to a stop.

A flat piece styrofoam got caught up in my Explorer's undercarrage once. Sounded similar to that. Drove me nuts on the way home from work.

Something probably blew in, got stuck and got blown out. Just as long as it doesn't come back, I guess.

vcoglian, I love the bull bar and am thinking of getting one but does it cover any part of the license plate? I need to get one that does not block any portion of the plate. Looks great though.

Larry:

I have the same noise as well on my '04 SR5 V6. I think it is coming from the engine though. I posted the same question on this forum and described the noise just like you did. I believe someone told me that the V6s have this problem. Didn't really get a concrete answer. Dammit, I took my car to the shop today and didn't mention this to them.

I seem to have a similar noise as well. Seems to be right around 55 mph. I can't tell where it's coming from, everything looks OK, and the noise is only there sometimes. It makes me nuts sometimes.

That's it, at about 55 mph, just like a playing card in bicycle spokes. It has happened twice. I stop, it stops and does not start up again. Messed up a good t-shirt climbing around under the 4Runner.

I hope someone out there can give us some ideas.

I called the shop yesterday and mentioned this problem. They decided to keep the vehicle overnight so they could test it when it was cold. I'll let you know if they found anything.

That may be it. Did you ever notice how they click ever so slightly when idling? Park next to a concrete wall and let it idle, that's when you can hear it. So if it does it at idle maybe it happens at other throttle settings as well.

It happened again last night, about two blocks from home, 30 mph, at six o'clock after not having been driven since the same time the day before. I stopped, waited about 30 seconds, without turning the engine off, started driving and it happened as soon as I was back up to 30 mph. I then stopped, turned off the engine, waited again for about 30 seconds and started again, no noise, and it did not come back.

This is driving me nuts. Intermittently between 50-55mph on any road surface it makes that wierd noise kike it suddenly has a flat spot on the tire. Everybody that rides with me hears it.
Has anybody figured this thing out yet?

Since my last post I have not had the problem. The dealer ran a check and could not even come up with a useful comment. The service manager said he has NEVER had a complaint like that, and to bring it back when it's happening. He said that I might be hearing SOMETHING ELSE and that there really is not a problem, it could be just me. Don't you just love it when someone it totally confused and tries to call you and idiot without pissing you off?

Here is what I think a lot of conversations go like:

Customer- I have this problem....
Service Advisor- Oh, that's normal
Customer- But my car quit and I had to have it towed.
Service Advisor- We will check it and give you a call, sign here, but we have to notify you that you are signing for two hours work in case it's not covered by warranty ($160.00 US).
Customer - Ring, ring, hello how's my car.
Service Advisor - we could not find anything, but your car is running just fine. Come in and pick it up, your ticket is with the cashier.
Cashier- Which car are you? Here's your bill, it's $160.00.

later....
Customer- My car is having the same problem, again.
Service Advisor- Oh, last time there was not a problem. What is it now?
Customer - It quit running .............
