Clunking noise when shifting??

ever time when i shift the 4R in reverse and back up then shift it in drive the transmission make a loud CLUNK noise? it's kind of fill and sound like if you were backing up but did not stop at a stand still before shifting in to drive. is this normal?

might be a bad U-joint, the sound is oh so common to lifted Jeep drivers. I have replaced probly 20 on the side of the road over the last few years. but not sure on a runner, esp a new one

I think it's normal, mine does it when cold but once it warms up it shifts from R to D4 smooth. Try it, you'll see.

Obviously I have no idea how loud your "clunk" is, but to hear your transmission changing out of reverse and into drive is completely normal. In other works "clunk" = normal. "BANG" = not normal.

Mine will do that when the engine RPM has not dropped down to idle speed. I normally will let the vehicle warm up a little. My issue is, when I shift from reverse to drive. I can hear loud creaking noises coming from the rear brakes. Toyota said it was normal.

It shouldn't do it.
Have you lubed the the driveline?
Especially the slip joints on the 2 driveshafts they are the culprits in many wierd clunck and jerks when driving.

I am experiencing the same problems while shifting from reverse to drive and vice versa.
But yesterday I noticed grinding sound when pushing "hard" and releasing the brakes while doing the reverse to drive shifting.

Is the grinding sound the brakes make normal?

I think most of what people are describing here is normal. If I back out of my driveway and don't come to an absolute dead stop before shifting into D, I get a bit of a clunk. I've also heard that lubing the propeller shaft / U joints can help.

As for the brakes, yeah they make some pretty hearty creaking sounds from time to time. I think it has to do with the amount of twisting flex of the suspension elements and the static / dynamic friction coefficients of the brake pad material. Different brake pad material might reduce the creaking, but it seems pretty harmless so I'm not worried about it.

By the way my 4Runner is a 2004 SR5 4WD V8 with 1700 miles...

I have a 3 week old '04 4R. Two weeks ago I started noticing the loud creaking noise when shifting from reverse to D and vice versa. Also, in stop and go traffic the brakes were making creaking noises too. It almost disappears after the vehicle has been driven for a while. Took it to the dealership today and they said it's normal - something about brake pads flexing in the calipers. However, I also have a '03 with 20k miles on it - never heard a single squeak from it - so don't quite buy this story.

Having it looked at by another dealership next week.

Had it looked at by another dealership today - even they say it's normal, everything is to spec. But I'm still startling people around when I pull out of the parking spot and shift into D - the loud creaking noise makes everyone look. This is strange that a manufacturer would call a noise like this normal - never heard anything like this in dozens of other cars I've driven.
