Clunk going in and out of 4WD

My 4Runner has started clunking in and out of 4wd lately. Anybody get this? Usually it engages smoothly and quietly. SO am I do for a gear oil change in the TC or drive more in 4wd since this is the 2wd season??

Was it ever silent switching in and out of 4WD? Mine always makes some kind of noise usually a little louder if it's not warmed up but not bad.

be sure to be going strait when you shift and moving slighlty. some pop it into nuetral while coasting from what ive read but we need more info.

4hi or 4lo?

moving or sitting still?

clunking is better than grinding or beeping and not engaging.

I have never heard much noise of any of my 4X4 vehicles (GMC S15, Ford F250, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevy S10, 4Runner) going into for 4wd except 4Low if moving (more of a grinding noise). Even my 1982ish beat to all hell F250 and heavily abused jeep Wrangler are quiet going in and usually coming out. If you have tension on your drive line you will probably here noise. Occasionally I have had to go in reverse in disengage 4wd. When I have done this I will sometimes here a subtle clunk. I did hear a slight clunk recently while disengaging the 4wd in the 4runner while turning sharply at low speed.

Mine almost always has a clunk going into 4hi. More if im moving. Going into 4lo is usually pretty quiet. Just depends how the teeth are lined up. You dont need to drive in 4wd more, just shift in and out more to keep the actuators freed up.

The truck was cold both times. I'll let it warm up some and see what happens. It has always clunked loud into 4lo but 4hi was always smooth & quiet. Now it kind of clunky. I'm do for the drivline oil change in 4000 miles so maybe a new shot of limited slip oil in the TC will do the trick. But my truck has always seemed to run quieter & track better when in 4wd hi.
