Clunk / Grind from 2H to 4H while moving.....

Hello, I recently bought a used 03 4runner. When shifting from 2H to 4H (while moving, approx 40mph) I get a short clunk / maybe a grind. It sounds more toward the front than the middle (transfer case area). I have not tried shifting it without moving yet, but I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if this is somewhat normal, or should the transfer be totally un-noticable? If not normal or if I just should be doing this at that speed on dry road (was just testing it) let me know. The 4runner has 100,000 miles.

If you try to switch from 2HI to 4HI while stationary, it may or may not go into 4wd. If the splines aren't lined up, the light will just flash forever. You can just move forward or backwards a bit and it should go right into 4wd.

That said, if you're worried about excessive clunking or grinding when engaging 4wd, you can make it a habit to engage 4wd at very low speed. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it at 40 MPH (as you already mentioned), I'm just saying that it will be easier on the 4wd system if you engage 4wd at as low speed as possible.

^^All of of the above^^.. For me, doing it while going slow is key. If it hesitates, I do the put it in N, then D trick. Never had a problem. The only thing I recently started doing is to test 4H once a month as recommended.

While going into 4H was fine, I had the same issue you had but in spades when trying to go from 4H to 4L. Lot's a serious grinding. After continuing to put it in 4L several times over the period of a couple of days the grinding stopped. Try changing your drive into 4H often for a while, you may well find that clears things right up.

Wow good info...just tried to put my 04 into 4wd tonight...and got a few brain farts...2wd to 4hi was fine..I went to 4lo and the light blinked and buzzer beeped like crazy....but did not engage....I switched back to 4hi...and the buzzer stopped, but the 4lo light is still blinking...tried to stop, reverse...no luck...

any ideas...

Are you going directly into 4L, or already having it in 4H then shifting it down? Also are you completely stopped and in neutral on your shifter when going for 4L. If you try for 4L and it doesn't work the blinking may not stop until get it out of 4WD altogether.

In any case try going into 4H then driving a short distance...then try 4L after the stop / neutrual routine. If it doesn't work go out of 4WD then try 4H driving backwards a short distance. After which try the stop / neutral and then 4L. Good luck and keep trying....you wouldn't be the first person who had to take some time to get a seldom used 4WD system back in synch.

Exactly, :iagree: w/Maz 100%

ok we are in good shape...took it for another ride this am...went from 2wd in to 4wd...drove a bit...stop/brake/neutral/4lo...it locked right up...drove about 2 miles....stop/brake/neutral/back to 4hi...came out...drove a few miles...then 4hi to 2 hi....no issues...

Thanks agian for the vote of confidence...I did not sleep a wink last night thinking about the bill from the stealership....

Thanks for your replies.

Glad to hear it's kind of normal. I will now have to test my 4L. I think I did this before I bought it, but definitely will double check.
